When God asks you to give something up, it's often seen as a call to trust Him for something greater, making room for divine purpose, not a punishment; it involves surrendering idols, sins, or idols of the heart (like control, specific plans, or even loved ones) to foster a deeper relationship, with the belief that He will replace temporary losses with eternal blessings or a more fulfilling path, requiring faith, prayer, and self-evaluation to discern His will and release what hinders you.
The same God that loved and cared for Abraham loves and cares for us. When God asks us to give something up to Him, it's not because He wants our stuff. It's because He wants to show us that He is good and able to take care of us.
1 Corinthians 10:13, “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear.” 2 Chronicles 15:7, But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded.”
So how can Scripture help us know if God is speaking to us? Well, if a conviction of yours lines up with God's Word, or if you're facing a choice and one of your options lines up with Scripture, that's an excellent indicator that God might be encouraging you to pursue a particular path.
He wants to do through us what is beyond us.
For when I am weak, then I am strong”(2 Corinthians 12:9-10). When God asks you to do hard things, you are relying on His strength to get you through…and that glorifies God and shows the world what He can do through you.
As the apostle John writes in 1 John 5:3, “In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome.” Like my old car's engine light, God gives us warning signs when we are veering off-course.
In the Bible God gets angry at human violence. He gets angry at powerful leaders who oppress other humans. And the thing that makes God more angry than anything else in the Bible is Israel's constant covenant betrayal.
Obedience seems to always be a key part of God's testing. He gives us things to do which make no sense to us and are not particularly appealing, although they are good for us. Then he watches our response to learn exactly how we feel about our relationship with him. If we trust him, we typically obey.
The Bible describes the night as divided into watches. Midnight to 3AM is the third watch. From 3AM to 6AM is the fourth. It was during this time that Jesus prayed and even walked on the water toward His disciples.
One of the most significant signs that God may be telling you to move on from a situation is a persistent lack of peace. When something is not in alignment with God's will, it often leads to inner turmoil and unease. If you're concerned about circumstances that are disturbing you, pray about that situation.
In this verse, God commands you and me not to surrender to any temptation to give up. He promises that in “due season,” a harvest will be reaped if we won't quit — the manifestation of what each of us is believing for will come if we will not cave in and give up.
Proverbs 23:7, "For as he thinks in his heart, so is he," means a person's inner thoughts and motives define their true character, not just their outward actions or words, often used in context to warn against the insincere generosity of a stingy or envious person who calculates costs while offering food. It teaches that your internal beliefs shape who you become, urging readers to cultivate righteous thoughts to align with positive actions, as a calculating heart reveals true intentions.
Whatever you're going through, the Lord is going to gather you back up again. Even if you do give up on Jesus, He will never give up on you. To Him be the power for ever and ever.
So the easiest way to know if God is giving you a “No” is to figure out if there is sin involved. If there is anything sinful about your request, obviously God is saying, “No.” Sometimes, however, there comes moral decisions that are not quite as clear in the Bible.
The biggest unforgivable sin varies by faith, but in Christianity, it's often seen as blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, a persistent rejection of God's grace, while in Islam, the gravest unforgivable sin is shirk, or associating partners with God, if not repented. Pride is also considered a foundational, serious sin across many faiths, linked to the downfall of figures like Satan.
In the hardest moments of our lives, God is fighting for us. Isaiah 43:2: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.”
If the time that you awaken is between 3:00 am and 5:00am, it could also be a sign of your Higher Power alerting you to pay attention to messages that are being sent to align you with your higher purpose.
What time did Jesus go to bed? As discussed previously, although there were times when Jesus would stay up all night to pray, it is likely that like most people in those times, he went to bed at nightfall and rose at first light.
Here are seven end-time signs to aid us in being prepared for the most important day of our lives—and in all of human history.
