Australia's opposition to the death penalty is a long-standing, bipartisan policy position. All jurisdictions in Australia abolished the death penalty by 1985. In 2010, the Australian government passed legislation that prohibited the reintroduction of capital punishment.
The last public execution in the United States occurred in 1936. As in Europe, the practice of execution was moved to the privacy of chambers. Viewing remains available for those related to the person being executed, victims' families, and sometimes reporters.
Why were public hangings stopped? Public execution was stopped in 1868 as too many people saw it as inhumane and it no longer acted as a deterrent to other criminals. Huge crowds would gather for a public hanging. The condemned person was insulted and pelted with rotten fruit by the crowds gathered.

The decision of the New South Wales Legislative Council to perform judicial executions as private rather than public events was innovative but still controversial.

Ronald Joseph Ryan (21 February 1925 – 3 February 1967) was the last person to be legally executed in Australia. Ryan was found guilty of shooting and killing warder George Hodson during an escape from Pentridge Prison, Victoria, in 1965.
The last and most recent federal execution was of Dustin Higgs, who was executed on January 16, 2021.
Hakamada's sister, Hideko, said: “I was waiting for this day for 57 years and it has come.” Iwao Hakamada is now 87 years old. The average time on death row from sentencing to execution in the U.S. has grown considerably from about 6 years in 1985 to over 20 years in 2019.
Use of the guillotine continued in France in the 19th and 20th centuries, and the last execution by guillotine occurred in 1977. In September 1981, France outlawed capital punishment altogether, thus abandoning the guillotine forever. There is a museum dedicated to the guillotine in Liden, Sweden.
The first executions carried out under European law in Australia took place in Western Australia in 1629, when Dutch authorities hanged the mutineers of the Batavia. Capital punishment had been part of the legal system of Australia since British settlement.
After its adoption, the device remained France's standard method of judicial execution until abolition of capital punishment in 1981. The last person to be executed by guillotine was Hamida Djandoubi on 10 September 1977.
Capital punishment is a legal penalty in China. It is commonly applied for murder and drug trafficking, and is a legal penalty for other offenses. Executions are carried out by lethal injection or by shooting.
On June 16th, 1944, the state of South Carolina executed George Stinney, Jr. He was fourteen years, six months, and five days old, the youngest person ever executed in the United States in the 20th Century.
Current status. Today, the death penalty has been abolished in France.
United States Capital Punishment:
The death penalty is still legal in California, Oregon, and Pennsylvania, but there are gubernatorial moratoriums on executions in these three states. Texas leads the nation in the number of executions since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976.
The first known federal execution under this authority was conducted by U.S. Marshal Henry Dearborn of Maine on June 25, 1790. He was ordered to execute one Thomas Bird for murder on the high seas.
Most known executions took place in China (1000s), Iran (at least 576) Saudi Arabia (196), Egypt (24), and the USA (18). In 2022, 93% of known global executions (excluding China) were carried out in the Middle East and North Africa.
The prisoner, still alive but riddled with holes and profoundly traumatized, was returned to his cell. He had been strapped to the gurney for four hours. Smith is one of only two people alive today who have survived an execution procedure in the US.
The Penal Execution Code specifies that the execution is to be carried out "privately by shooting".
Hanging is the only common method of execution in 21st-century Iran, usually carried out in prison. Compared to other countries that use hanging (such as Japan or Malaysia) with a complex gallows designed to drop the condemned and break the neck, Iran's gallows are very simple and inexpensive.

A total of 66 people were hanged in South Australia and 45 of these hangings took place at Adelaide Gaol. These hangings were undertaken: 7 outside the front door.
Duration of a Life Sentence in Australia
In New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia, these periods are 25 years. Tasmania has set it at 20 years and Queensland at 15 years.
The Hanging Tower, built in 1841, was converted and used for the last four executions during the 1950s and 1960s. The last of 66 executions recorded in South Australia took place in 1964.
