Condoms gained significant popularity in the 1980s due to the AIDS epidemic, shifting focus from just contraception to STI prevention, and became truly mainstream with latex in the 1920s making them affordable and accessible, while usage also surged in the mid-20th century before the pill.
Couples in colonial America relied on female-controlled methods of contraception if they used contraceptives at all. The first known documents describing American condom use were written around 1800, two to three decades after the American Revolutionary War.
In 1920, the first latex condoms were made, and by 1950, condoms were being mass produced due to the cheap price and fast production time. At the time of the 1950s mass production, the quality of condoms increased by making them lubricated, tighter, and thinner.
So many young people simply don't view condoms as necessary or important anymore. To them, using condoms is a bit like doing preventative maintenance on a car—it gets put lower and lower on your to-do list until a life-or-death moment. They're not just a prevention tool, though. They're a part of sex.
Fact 1: Condoms used to be made of animal intestines – and before that, men covered their penises in tar. As we get older and access to contraceptives gets easier, more women opt for hormonal methods of pregnancy prevention. However, for men, there's no analogous product currently out on the market.
The Bible literally has zero to say on condoms.
It was at that time that the German military started promoting condom use among its soldiers. No German sailor went aboard his ship without his “kit.”4 The American military even experimented in the early twentieth century to see if providing condoms to soldiers would lower the rates of sexually transmitted diseases.
Gen Z is reported to have kinkier sex. More than half (55%) of Gen Z respondents claimed to explore new kinks compared to 49% of Millennials and 39% of Gen X and 33% of Boomers. One explanation is that young adults are more comfortable exploring their sexuality and that kinks are discussed more openly than ever.
The percentage of women and men aged 15–44 who used a condom “every time” they had intercourse in the past 12 months decreased with older age. The percentages were 35.6% and 53.5% among 15– to 19-year-olds and 10.9% and 9.4% among 35– to 44-year-olds for women and men, respectively.
Here are some disadvantages of the external condom. Condoms don't prevent pregnancy as well as IUDs or hormonal forms of birth control do. Condoms prevent pregnancy only if you use them every time you have intercourse. Condoms may break or leak.
'Bad' girls have always known how to look after themselves. Barrier methods were always very popular. A halved, emptied lemon skin placed over the cervix worked well, for example, as did sponges soaked in natural spermicides such as vinegar.
The box contained six “pure gum latex” condoms, often colloquially called “rubbers.” Co-Ed condoms were marketed throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Beginning in 1872, the Comstock Act had prohibited interstate commerce in obscene literature and immoral material.
The Rubber Revolution
In 1839, Charles Goodyear revolutionized the rubber industry when he made vulcanized rubber. He mass produced rubber condoms, intrauterine devices, douching syringes and diaphragms. Despite federal and state anti-birth control laws, "rubbers" were enormously popular and sales were brisk.

The Cornstock laws which were passed in 1873 in the United States prohibited the vending of condoms via post, and the laws prevented the public advertising of contraception. Venereal diseases were a growing concern after 1865 which saw the end of the American Civil War, and a new era in history.
Sea sponges soaked in vinegar (and other spermicides) were used by some women as barrier contraceptives in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The sponges were inserted to block and absorb semen. However, this traditional method of contraception was not very effective, as the barrier was permeable.
The downward trend in condom usage is due to a few things: medical advancements like long-term birth control options and drugs that prevent sexually transmitted infections; a fading fear of contracting HIV; and widely varying degrees of sex education in high schools.
Most evidence that condoms help you last longer in bed is anecdotal, but for many men, wearing a condom seems to delay ejaculation.
Japan has the highest rate of condom usage in the world: in that country, condoms account for almost 80% of contraceptive use by married women. On average, in developed countries, condoms are the most popular method of birth control: 28% of married contraceptive users rely on condoms.
Whilst boomers and millennials may use the 😂 emoji, this has long since been deemed 'uncool' (or 'cheugy') by Gen Z. Instead, this has been replaced by the skull (💀) or the crying emoji (😭), dramatising the idea of 'dying with laughter'.
Ten percent of young males and 7 percent of females reported being a virgin in 2022 to 2023. “In sum, for young adult males, sexlessness has roughly doubled across all measures over the last 10 years or so. For young adult females, it has risen by roughly 50 percent,” stated the Institute of Family Studies.

By the end of the war, approximately 7,000 of the 10,500 SIS staff were female. Early Condoms
Because of this, people often associated the condom with venereal disease and prostitution. Early condoms were fashioned of linen, sheep gut, or fish bladder, and used with ointments and medicinal solutions.
