A scrap man takes most metal items, including ferrous (iron/steel) like old appliances, cars, and construction bits, and valuable non-ferrous metals like copper, brass, and aluminum from wiring, pipes, or rims, plus batteries, but often avoids fridges, freezers, and TVs due to hazardous gases or components, though some do take them if properly handled.
HAZARDOUS LIQUIDS OR GASES
This includes fuels, solvents, paints, thinners and gases etc.
We collect all kinds of scrap metal including, but not limited to: washing machines, cookers, dishwashers, car batteries, boilers, radiators, bikes, copper cylinders, cars, TV's, vacuum cleaners, microwaves, gates, bed frames, gym equipment lawn mowers, cast iron baths, alloy wheels and pretty much any electronic ...
Copper scrap can be found in various forms, including wires, pipes, sheets, and even in electronic devices. Due to its high demand and versatility, copper scrap is considered one of the most valuable scrap metals. Take a look at the way in which we divert and recycle over 1000 tonnes of scrap metal each month here. >
Scrap metal collection is free but can be subject to charges depending on distance. We can also buy scrap metal from you if there is a large enough quantity. Get in touch to find out more.
Fridges contain several components that require special handling: Refrigerants: These gases can contribute to ozone depletion if released into the atmosphere. Insulation foam: Often contains harmful substances that need proper disposal.
Aluminum: Aluminum scrap normally levels from £0.50 to £1.00 according to kilogram. Steel: Steel is one of the most common styles of scrap metal, and its price varies broadly, frequently around £0.10 to £0.20 according to kilogram.
On average, one aluminum can weighs about 14-15 grams, or approximately 0.03 pounds. With a market rate of $0.55 per pound, you'd need around 182 pounds of aluminum cans to earn $100. This equates to about 6,000 cans.
Current market rates for copper scrap are typically 30-40 times higher than steel and about 5 times more than aluminum. This significant price difference makes copper the undisputed king of the scrap metal world. The exceptional value of copper primarily stems from its outstanding electrical conductivity.
To earn $1000 from recycling aluminum cans at this rate: At 50 cents per pound: You would need about 4,000 pounds of aluminum (since $1000 divided by $0.50 equals 2000 pounds). Given that each pound contains roughly 32-35 cans, you'd require between 128,000 and 140,000 cans!
What Will Your Scrap Yard Not Take?
Most of the body is made of steel, which has a low per-pound value. However, refrigerators also house valuable components such as copper tubing and compressors. These parts can sometimes fetch a better price when removed separately, but the process isn't as straightforward as dropping off your tired Westinghouse.
Scrap metal companies may be able to recycle your washing machine free of charge or even pay you a small amount for the value of the metal. You can also contact local scrap metal collectors who may be willing to collect them from your home free of charge.
Cars, appliances, and carbon steel (used for construction) are among the most commonly recycled steel products seen at a scrap yard. Because items made with a lot of steel tend to weigh more than those made of copper or aluminum, a scrapper can make decent cash off a haul of ferrous.

10 Most Valuable Scrap Metals for High Profitability
The four primary precious metals are gold, silver, platinum, and palladium. Gold is probably the most well-known precious metal, valued for its beautiful yellow hue and its use in jewelry and electronics. It has been treasured for thousands of years, often compared to other forms of currency in ancient civilizations.
The best items to scrap for metal value include copper wire from electrical work, brass plumbing fixtures, aluminum siding and gutters, stainless steel appliances, catalytic converters (containing platinum), electric motors, air conditioning units, and computer/electronic components that contain precious metals.
In some places, recycling programs offer 5 cents for each plastic bottle under 24 ounces, and 10 cents for the larger ones. That means collecting 400 small bottles or just 200 large bottles could put $20 in your pocket. Even when returns are smaller in areas without deposits, the real reward goes beyond money.
If you want to make $100 fast, you have several options, including taking surveys, testing websites, babysitting, selling unwanted items, selling plasma, cleaning houses or rideshare and delivery driving.
Old Radiators (Steel or Aluminium)
Where to find them: Heating systems, garage spares, loft clearances. What's inside: Steel or aluminium. Estimated value: Steel ~£0.14/kg, Aluminium ~£1.10/kg. Top tip: Aluminium rads (usually from newer systems) are lighter but more valuable by weight.
As of November 2023, the latest scrap metal prices in Australia are as follows: Steel: $0.10 – $0.30 per kg. Copper: $5.00 – $10.00 per kg. Aluminium: $1.00 – $3.00 per kg.
