In The Force Awakens Visual Dictionary, it's confirmed that Kylo Ren's lightsaber contains a “cracked kyber crystal that is the cause of [the] ragged, unstable appearance” of the central blade and the two smaller blades that comprise the crossguard.
The crossguard blades allow Ren's saber to operate safely – his weapon is constructed around a dangerously flawed kyber crystal, which would be overloaded if not for the lateral plasma vents that create the quillons.
When Kylo Ren did this, he poured so much hate and anger into the crystal, causing it to crack. in the lightsaber itself, the crystal was extremely unstable. This is why his lightsaber has that crackling effect. He also made use of cross guards to make sure.
The technical reason behind Kylo Ren's unstable lightsaber and his crossguards is because he cracked his kyber crystal. This happened after his fall to the dark side when he “bled” his original blue crystal to red. And the impressive-looking crossguards are meant to vent the unstable crystal.
