Rats, like mice, can squeeze through impossibly small gaps (anything down to the size of a 10p coin) and should never be underestimated as to their versatility and persistence when trying to enter a building.
Rats can fit into holes about 1/2 of an inch in diameter. Rats and mice are excellent climbers, swimmers, and even jumpers. All of these abilities, combined with the fact that rats and mice only require tiny openings, allows them easy access to most homes and structures.
To make sure rats can't crawl through, you'll want to look for wire mesh with relatively small openings. A square weave with openings of a half-inch or smaller in size is your best bet. Due to its durability and versatility, stainless steel is most often used for rat exclusion.
Hard Metals – Since rats can't chew through hard metals like steel, it's one of the reasons it's recommended that holes are filled with wire mesh and steel wool and then filled with caulking. Metal tiling is also a great way to prevent them from getting into your home from the floor.
Mice and rats have somewhat collapsible rib cages. Their ribs have a greater capacity to flex than most other mammals, enabling them to flatten themselves temporarily to squeeze through narrow cracks.

Don't underestimate these little creatures– rats are strong (and determined) enough to open doors. Cabinets, cupboards, lids on containers, even your refrigerator door can easily be opened by a fairly motivated rat.
Rat damage all year round
This doesn't mean that they're gone, however. Rats will often stay outside during the day and return at night, usually by crawling through drains to enter the house.

Failing to report a rat infestation is not wise – they do not disappear of their own accord and they will likely spread.

Peppermint Oil
On a cotton ball use no more than 5 drops of 100% peppermint essential oil. Spread the oil on areas that you want rats to avoid, in your case, around the garden.
Baking soda combines with the stomach acids to produce carbon dioxide gas which rats are unable to tolerate. In turn, it builds up within their system and eventually causes internal blockage and rupture. Soon enough, you will have the rat-free environment you always deserved.
