After a colostomy, you can generally wear your normal clothes, but opt for high-waisted or pleated items, looser fits, and layers like jackets or scarves for comfort and discretion, especially initially; avoid tight waistbands directly over the stoma, but you can still wear tight clothes and swimwear with support belts, wraps, or specialized undergarments. Experiment with different styles, like A-line dresses or comfortable leggings, and use accessories like belly bands or wraps for added security and confidence.
You can wear whatever you want if you have an ostomy
For instance, tight waistbands or belts might feel restrictive over your stoma. Be open to experimenting with different styles of clothes. But don't let your ostomy keep you from wearing tightfitting clothes or even your bathing suit.
There is no reason why you can't wear a variety of different clothing that is comfortable and fashionable. The most important rule with clothing, is to ensure that belts or waistbands are not worn over your stoma or restrict the bag too much.
- High-Waisted Pants: Many users recommend wearing high-waisted pants, jeans, or leggings that sit above the stoma. This allows the bag to expand without being constricted and provides better coverage. High-waisted pants can also help conceal the bag and prevent it from being visible through clothing.
Depending on your personal style preferences, you may want to try trousers with waistband pleats, which can give you more room across the stoma pouch area. These types of trousers are available in most stores. A belt can sometimes cause a problem if it goes across the stoma. Braces may work better.
The "two-finger test" for jeans is a simple way to check for a comfortable waist fit: you should be able to slide two fingers (index and middle) between your natural waist and the waistband of the jeans, indicating enough room to move and sit without feeling too tight or cutting into your skin, but not so loose that they'll sag. It's a quick gauge to see if there's room for a meal or bloating without needing a belt immediately.
A goodie bag
This could be a mix of a lot of itty-bitty things combined in a gift bag, like; Lip balm, toothbrush, fluffy socks, snacks (if diet allows them to eat it), magazines etc.
If you are worried about your stoma when you are showering, a good tip is to use a stoma cap to cover it, to prevent irritation. If you are bathing, you may prefer to keep your bag on, in case your stoma is active when you are in the bath and leaks stool into the water.
Casual clothing and layers
Opting for a relaxed fit when choosing your clothes can often help to conceal your ostomy pouch. Looser garments tend to provide the additional space that can help your clothes to hang naturally over the pouch and reduce the visibility of an outline.
What are the Most Common Stoma Complications?
Empty the pouch
You do not need to wear a hospital gown after the procedure or surgery. Most patients are more comfortable in their own clothing. You should feel free to bring items like a button-down shirt or blouse, loose-fitting T-shirt, gym shorts, sweat pants and a robe.
A stoma itself does not automatically qualify someone for a blue badge so that they can legally use a disabled parking space or park where such a badge would allow.
It usually takes around 8 weeks to recover from a colostomy and get back to your usual activities. It's important to rest and take the time you need to adjust to the change in your body.
That way you are always on the safe side. If you have recently had surgery, it is advisable to talk to your surgeon or stoma care nurse about showering and bathing on a daily basis. It is generally recommended that you do not take long baths in the first few weeks so that the stitches and the wound do not become moist.
Plastic or Waterproof Stool: You can use a sturdy plastic stool or a waterproof stool inside the shower. Make sure it's slip-resistant and stable.
Can You Go Into Hot Tubs with a Colostomy Bag? Rest assured that you can also safely soak in a hot tub. Just keep in mind that if you spend a lot of time in hot water—whether in the bathtub or a hot tub—your pouching system might not last as long, says the Canadian Society of Intestinal Research.
