If you take blood thinners, you might need to stop taking them for several days before your cortisone shot to reduce bleeding or bruising risk. Some dietary supplements also have a blood-thinning effect. Ask your doctor what medications and supplements you should avoid before your cortisone shot.
Cortisone injections are given in your doctor's office and don't require any special preparation. But if you take blood thinners, you might need to stop taking them for a few days before the shot as they can increase bruising and bleeding risks.
On the day of your appointment, please refrain from eating or drinking 4 hours prior to your appointment time. You may eat and drink immediately following your injection.
Some key drugs that interact with steroids include anticoagulants (such as warfarin), drugs for blood pressure, antiepileptics, antidiabetic drugs, antifungal drugs, bronchodilators (such as salbutamol) and diuretics.
Cortisone has no known severe interactions with other drugs.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs)
Ibuprofen medication like Advil, Nuprin, aspirin, or most pain relievers should not be used before the procedure. NSAIDs affect platelet behavior in the blood, which can affect how well it clots.
According to the National Institutes of Health, the side effects from cortisone shots include: Dizziness or headaches. Skin issues, including dryness, thinness, acne, dry skin, and red or purple blotches. Fatigue and trouble sleeping.
Take prednisolone with breakfast so it does not upset your stomach. Taking prednisolone in the morning also means it's less likely to affect your sleep. If your prednisolone tablets are labelled as "enteric coated" or "gastro resistant", you can take these with or without food but make sure to swallow them whole.
Although there is no way to precisely predict the body's response to a cortisone injection, most patients will begin to feel relief of their symptoms within 48 to 72 hours after the injection. When inflammation is severe or if the condition is chronic, the cortisone might need several days to take effect.
You may also get some bruising where the injection was given. This should go away after a few days. It helps to rest the joint for 24 hours after the injection and avoid heavy exercise. It's safe to take everyday painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen.
Cortisone shots are injections that contain high doses of corticosteroids, powerful steroid medications that mimic cortisone, a steroid your body naturally produces. These injections also usually contain numbing medications to help prevent any pain.
Avoid stimulants, such as caffeine, because these can worsen insomnia, a side effect of prednisone.

Can I walk after a cortisone injection in my foot? After a steroid injection, you can return to most daily activities, including walking. The treating clinician may suggest against walking a distance/many steps. You should have no issues with walking out of the clinic upon completion of the injection.
Interactions between your drugs
No interactions were found between cortisone and Vitamin D3. However, this does not necessarily mean no interactions exist. Always consult your healthcare provider.
Corticosteroids are used to treat inflammation caused by many different conditions. Both corticosteroids and alcohol can suppress your immune system, raising your risk of getting an infection. While alcohol may not directly interact with corticosteroids, it can potentially worsen the underlying condition being treated.
Generally, corticosteroids are given in the morning due to the disease related process. For example, patients with RA experience more clinical symptoms during the early morning, which is believed to be associated with the peak level of interleukin 6 (IL-6) (5).
Stomach Upset – Cortisone injections can cause stomach upset for a few days. Some people also experience hiccups. Tendon Rupture - Cortisone can also cause weakening of tendons even tendon rupture. This is one reason your doctor may limit the number of cortisone injections administered.
Where the shot is injected and the size of the needle can impact how much pain you may feel. Injections given in the hand and sole of the foot tend to hurt the most.
Generally, pain after cortisone injection is the most common side effect. We call this reaction a cortisone flare. Usually, a cortisone flare starts after 6 hours and lasts up to 5 days.
As a general rule, patients advised receiving a steroid injection into a joint are cautioned against any heavy lifting or exercise. But after 10 days to two weeks, they are encouraged to start gentle range-of-motion exercises and to remain active as tolerated.
Cortisone oral tablet doesn't cause drowsiness. However, it can cause other side effects.
Take this medicine with food or milk to avoid stomach irritation. Swallow the delayed-release tablet whole. Do not crush, break, or chew it.
