The main secret Beth tells Rip involves her teenage pregnancy with his child, revealing her brother Jamie forced her into a sterilization procedure (a hysterectomy) instead of just an abortion, a betrayal she kept hidden for years, which she eventually revealed to Rip to use as leverage against Jamie and ultimately to explain why she can't have children with Rip, fulfilling her desire for no secrets between them.
Beth does disclose what she is infertile. She ask her brother the lawyer one she hates to help her. He takes her for an abortion. To like a reservation something like that. Anyway they did a hysterectomy. He didn't know they were going to do that. But she never forgave him for good reason.
She never told Rip because she knew he would kill Jamie for it. Beth has been holding that fact over Jamie's head as leverage ever since.
What did Beth whisper to the casket? The Dutton family finally has a service for John, where Beth once again promises to avenge her dad. After laying a white rose on his casket, Beth leans down and whispers, "I will avenge you," then leaves the service.
I do believe the main significance of the letter for the story progression was to tell Rip that he shouldn't be afraid to marry Beth and that John already trust him and considers him to be like another son to him. There's some previous indication from Beth to John that Rip feels a little "left outside" of the family.
After Beth and Rip began their romance as teenagers, Beth decided to make Rip jealous by going on a date with an older cowboy named Rowdy (Kai Caster).

Beth became pregnant by Rip and, fearing for what would happen to Rip and her from her father, she kept this information from Rip. She sought help from her brother Jamie Dutton, who fearing being recognized as the Dutton daughter, took her to a Broken Rock parental clinic.
In the first season, I assumed they were both in their mid-40s because that's how old they look and act IMO, and that's how old the actors actually are. But in season two Beth reveals that she is 34 and because of their relationship starting in their teens, we can assume Rip is around the same age.
Beth's mom wanted to toughen her up. So she could succeed in a man's world. In season one episode seven, when Beth 'becomes a woman' her mother says “I have to turn you into the man most men will never be … You're gonna hate it, sweetheart.”
Jamie did not inform Beth that she would be sterilized during her early abortion. This led to her not being able to embrace motherhood anymore.
