Eucalyptus or Peppermint oil can repel rats because they hate the smell. Another way to use a rat's sense of smell against them is to plant peppermint and catnip in strategic places. Diatomaceous earth is non-toxic to humans, but it can dry out rats until they die.
Pest control is the most efficient method to get rid of rats quickly but the usage of mouse traps, snap traps, chemical baits, and live traps are all effective methods to get rid of rats as quickly and effectively as possible.

Get rid of rats fast Using Traps
Place traps along the walls, behind furniture, and in areas where you have noticed rat droppings or other signs of activity. Use bait such as peanut butter, cheese, or fruit to lure rats into the traps. Check and replace traps regularly until you have caught all the rats.
Raptors, including hawks, owls, eagles and falcons, are common predators. Red tail hawks, found across most of North America, and American kestrels, the smallest falcon in North America, will hunt rats by day. The barn owl, known for its characteristic round and white face, is a common nocturnal predator.

Even this scent of a cat can make rats scatter. Neighbors say they haven't seen rats since the cats got to work. When the cats are put in place, they'll kill off a lot of the rat population, “the other rats will get a whiff of (the cats') pheromones and bug out and leave the area,” Nickerson said.
With the right bait and location setup, the traditional snap traps are still the most common and effective way of catching rats. These rodents are primarily nut and seed eaters, so using a small amount of peanut butter or hazelnut spread works best.
