While data shows racial disparities in arrests, particularly with Black individuals being overrepresented in bank robbery arrests relative to their population, studies emphasize bank robbery is primarily a male crime, often linked to unemployment and prior criminal history rather than inherent racial traits, with data varying by location and year. Statistics, like those from the U.S. Sentencing Commission, indicate Black individuals make up a significant portion of those prosecuted for robbery offenses, but also highlight the complexity, showing white individuals are arrested more in absolute numbers for property crimes overall, and many analyses point to economic factors.
The typical bank robber is a young, unemployed male recidivist, somewhat more likely to be black than white. Most have extensive criminal histories, with previous incarcerations.
Crime statistics. Scholars have found that some racial and ethnic minorities, particularly African-Americans, are disproportionately represented in the arrest and victimization reports which are used to compile crime rate statistics in the United States.

Nationally, one in 81 African American adults are serving time in America's state prisons. Black Americans are imprisoned at 5 times the rate of white people, and American Indians and Hispanic people are imprisoned at 4 times and 2 times the white rate, respectively.
The targets of hate crime
Of the 11,679 hate crimes reported: 5,866 were on the basis of race. 3,004 against Black people. 797 against Latinx people (the second highest ever recorded).
Victimization rates show clear racial disparities. American Indian people and African Americans are the most likely to be victimized by serious violent offenses, followed by Hispanic people and, finally, by non-Hispanic White and Asian people.
According to data from the 2019 United States Census, people who are Black or African American make up 13.4% of the United States population (QuickFacts). However, nearly 40% of missing persons are people of color (“Statistics,” Black and Missing). Black children make up about 33% of all missing child cases.
Black individuals arrested are more likely to have prior felony convictions than other racial and ethnic groups. In NYC, 25 percent of Black, 21 percent of Hispanic, and 17 percent of white individuals arrested have prior felony convictions.
