In the United States, non-Hispanic White individuals have the highest rates of overall alcohol use and current drinking compared to other racial and ethnic groups. However, the picture is more complex when looking at specific types of alcohol use (such as binge drinking) and related consequences.
Rates of daily heavy drinking were higher among Hispanics (33.9 percent), Native Americans (28.4 percent), and Whites (27.3 percent) compared with Blacks (22.5 percent) and Asians (19.2 percent).
Men in Romania are, by and large, the heaviest drinkers on the planet. The average Romanian male drinks 27.3 liters, roughly seven and a half gallons, per year. It's not just the men in Romania that boast such high numbers.
Prevalence of substance use
Native Americans had the highest prevalence of alcohol or drug use (48%); Native Americans (21%), multiple-race adolescents (18%), and whites (16%) had a higher prevalence of using both alcohol and drugs than other groups (Table 1).
Russia and Australia have the highest prevalence of alcohol dependence overall, with 2.61 per cent and 2.58 per cent, respectively. According to the WHO, US has the lowest rate of alcohol dependence with only 1.92 per cent.

In contrast, Romania, Portugal and Latvia had the highest consumption, reaching over 11.5 litres annually. Over the past decade, most countries have seen a decrease in alcohol consumption.

The 1-2-3 drinking rule is a guideline for moderation: 1 drink per hour, no more than 2 drinks per occasion, and at least 3 alcohol-free days each week, helping to pace consumption and stay within safer limits. It emphasizes pacing alcohol intake with water and food, knowing standard drink sizes (12oz beer, 5oz wine, 1.5oz spirits), and avoiding daily drinking to reduce health risks, though some health guidance suggests even lower limits.
Attitudes towards drinking alcohol differ across the UK, US and Canada. According to World Bank data up to 2020, the UK had the highest per capita alcohol consumption (in litres), followed by Canada and then the US.
Water. Water is the world's most consumed drink, however, 97% of water on Earth is non-drinkable salt water.
While this cannot be said to have a direct causal relationship, Asians possess a certain type of DNA strain which increases the percentage chance for genetic alcohol insensitivity. This DNA sequence, or at least in relation to alcohol use, can mean that Asians generally avoid alcohol consumption more than other races.
Unadjusted national crime statistics from 2016 indicate that among all individuals arrested for a DUI, 82% were White, 23% were Latino, 14% were Black, and 2% were American Indian.
If your face goes red when drinking alcohol, you're not alone. More than one in three people with East Asian heritage (Chinese, Japanese and Korean) experience facial flushing when drinking beer, wine or spirits.
Prevalence rates of disordered gambling among Blacks (2.2%) and Native/Asian Americans (2.3%) were higher than that of Whites (1.2%).

In 2021, American Indian or Alaska Native (36.1%) or Multiracial people (34.6%) were more likely to have used illicit drugs in the past year compared with Black or African American (24.3%), White (22.5%), Hispanic or Latino (19.4%), or Asian people (11.1%).
Whites have greater odds than Blacks, Hispanics, and Asians for either a past-year or lifetime alcohol use disorder. Native Americans have greater odds than Whites for lifetime alcohol dependence but similar odds for lifetime alcohol abuse and past-year alcohol abuse and dependence.

Ireland followed with 12.75 litres, with Spain close behind at 12.67 litres. Despite its reputation for binge drinking, the UK just scraped into the top 10, with the average Brit consuming 11.45 litres per year. The US featured at 20th place, averaging 9.97 litres.
More than one in five Brits (21%) say they don't drink alcohol, according to our latest report surveying 1,587 Brits who drink alcohol compared with 417 who don't. And nearly two-thirds (62%) drink the NHS recommended 14 units or less per week.
