The standard position for patients having cataract surgery is the supine position: the patients lie flat on their backs to face the operating microscope overhead.
Tape the patient's head to the operating room table before starting the surgery. I use paper tape to gently hold the patient's head in place during the procedure. Place it over the forehead and use a tape that is gentle and will not damage delicate skin.
A standard reclining operating chair and operating microscope are used. Patients are seated instead of lying down, with the chair back elevated 30 to 80 degrees above the horizontal and the operating microscope rotated 45 to 60 degrees to vertical. The surgeon is seated or standing, facing the patient.
Patients who cannot lie flat for cataract surgery should be warned that their surgery may have a higher risk of surgical complications.

Typically, patients are awake during cataract surgery. Foods you should avoid are ones that are already associated with bad eye health and this includes foods high in refined carbs or sugars. These foods spike blood glucose levels and can lead to blood vessels in the eye being damaged. This will slow down your recovery time after surgery.
