Place a quarter-sized amount of ointment, Aquaphor, petroleum jelly, A&D, or antibiotic (bacitracin, Neosporin, or generic), on the penis or in the diaper to keep the raw surface from sticking to the underpants or diaper. It is important to use this for 5 to 7 days.
Incision care
Wash the area daily with warm water and pat it dry. Don't use hydrogen peroxide or alcohol, which can slow healing. You may cover the area with a thin layer of petroleum jelly, such as Vaseline, and gauze bandage if it weeps or rubs against clothing. Change the bandage every day.
Clean the circumcision site with warm water and a cotton ball once or twice a day. Apply Vaseline for several days. This helps keep the area clean and keeps the wound site from adhering to the diaper.
After the bandage is off, leave your penis open to air and apply Vaseline or bacitracin ointment around the sutures, several times each day. This will prevent the dry edges of the incision from sticking to your clothes. Avoid tight clothing, which can put pressure on your penis.
It is prudent to apply the petroleum jelly on glans and meatal area of circumcised boys after each diaper change for 6 months post-circumcision.
Even after the dressing is no longer needed, put a dab of petroleum jelly on the penis or on the front of the diaper for 3 to 5 days. This can help your baby avoid pain from rubbing and sticking to the diaper. Most of the time it takes between 7 to 10 days for a penis to heal.
After the circumcision, you will need to take steps to care for your baby's penis until it heals. This includes cleaning the area with plain water at least once daily, and whenever the area becomes dirty after a bowel movement. Allow the area to dry, and then apply petroleum jelly liberally to prevent irritation.
Normal Circumcision Healing
The scab at the incision line comes off in 7 to 10 days. If a Plastibell (plastic ring) was used, it should fall off by 14 days. 10 days is the average. While it can't fall off too early, pulling it off can cause bleeding.
It usually takes at least 10 days for your penis to heal after circumcision. You'll probably be advised to take at least 1 week off work to recover.
Recovery and Outlook
Recovery from circumcision takes about eight to 10 days. While the penis heals, it may look swollen and red.
Pat the cut (incision) dry. You may also take short baths if you wish. Avoid strenuous activities, such as bicycle riding, jogging, weight lifting, or aerobic exercise, for 4 weeks or until your doctor says it is okay. You can return to work and normal activities, including driving, when you are comfortable doing them.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends analgesia during circumcision because sufficient evidence exists that the procedure causes pain. EMLA cream, DPNB, and RB are all options; RB may provide the most effective analgesia. A sucrose pacifier and a padded chair may be effective adjuncts.
This pain often gets better in 3 or 4 days. But it may last for up to 2 weeks. Even though your baby's penis will likely start to feel better after 3 or 4 days, it may look worse. The penis often starts to look like it's getting better after about 7 to 10 days.
You find a spot of bleeding larger than a 5-centimetre circle from the incision. Your baby has signs of infection. Signs may include severe swelling; redness; a red streak on the shaft of the penis; or a thick, yellow discharge.
Clean the penis by gently blotting or squeezing warm water from a washcloth or cotton ball onto the penis. Do not use soap, lotion, powder or diaper wipes to clean the penis because they may cause stinging or irritation. Reapply a new piece of gauze with pure petroleum jelly.
The swelling gets worse for the first few days after surgery and then slowly resolves. Most of the swelling will be gone within a month but it takes up to 6 months for all of the swelling to go away. The head is often raw when the foreskin is pulled back for the circumcision.
What do I need to do to take care of the area that is healing? No special care is needed except placing petroleum jelly (Vaseline/A&D ointment) on the penis. Apply a lot, this will protect the area that is healing and prevent the penis from sticking to the diaper.
Care of the site. a. Do not manipulate the skin for the first day to avoid disrupting the delicate circumcision line and the fragile skin of the glans (head) of the penis. Just apply a lubricating salve to the tip, like A&D ointment (the brownish one, not the white one,) Aquaphor, or Coconut Oil.
Bathing. It's best to avoid full-body bathing until the second day after surgery, but sponge bathing is fine. After the second day, you can bathe your baby or toddler as normal; with newborns, you should wait until the umbilical cord has fallen off, at about two weeks. Avoid very warm water.
The most widely studied pharmacological intervention for pain management during circumcision is dorsal penile nerve block (DPNB) by injected lidocaine (lignocaine).
Use a topical steroid cream to help massage and soften the foreskin so that it's easier to retract. A prescription ointment or cream with 0.05 percent clobetasol propionate (Temovate) is usually recommended for this.
Lignocaine Gel- instillagel 2%
In addition to giving your child/young person painkilling medicine after circumcision, you will be given a tube of local anaesthetic jelly called instillagel to numb the area around the ring near the thread or the stitches. This may be used: If your child is in pain after circumcision.
It's important to keep the tip of your penis clean. The area should be kept dry for 48 hours after the operation. After this, take warm baths or showers once or twice a day. Don't use bubble bath or scented soaps, as these may irritate your healing wound.
It can be beneficial and very soothing to soak the wound for 10 to 15 minutes a couple of times a day in a cupful of cooled, boiled water to which has been added a teaspoon of salt.
Hence, it is best to avoid processed foods with artificial ingredients after circumcision. Therefore, avoid eating too many cakes, pastries, and cookies. Junk foods- Junk foods also are quite low in fibers, minerals, and vitamins.
