Rats are widely considered the smartest rodents due to their exceptional problem-solving, learning, and social skills, often ranking high among intelligent non-human animals for their ability to learn tricks, navigate mazes, show empathy, and even understand complex tasks like operating simple video games, making them excellent and trainable companions. While squirrels also show significant intelligence, particularly in food caching and deception, rats generally top the list for overall cognitive ability in the rodent family, notes Forterra Pest Control, PetHelpful, and Treehugger.
The winner is unanimously rats. MyAnimals lists rats as one of the six smartest rodents known, and mice appear nowhere on that list. Other than squirrels, homeowners do not frequently encounter the rest of the rodents listed – like the Mongolian gerbil.
