While you've probably already learned the more neutral terms like человек (human), девушка (girl), мужчина (man), and женщина (woman), Russian has so much more to offer when talking about other people. As you might expect, some of these terms can be quite complimentary.
The Russian word красивый can be used to describe both men and women: красивая женщина beautiful woman. красивая девушка beautiful girl. красивый мужчина handsome man.

This word is short for заяц (zayats) which is the Russian word meaning hare!
"Girlfriend" and "boyfriend" are most usually conveyed in Russian as девушка and парень (or молодой человек). Подруга usually means "girlfriend" as well but its meaning is somewhat less suggestive of a romantic relationship than that of девушка.

Traditionally, Russians would kiss three times on the cheek when meeting. Now, one kiss is more common, but a hug will also be expected. This might not be such a strange act for women, but men from other countries sometimes find it odd. Don't fret.
In some cases, a handshake may seem too formal. Women generally kiss people three times on alternating cheeks starting on the left. Male friends may hug one another or give each other a pat on the back.

We did say that Russian women are strong-willed, and so you should be too. You need to be firm, and sure of what you are doing. Take charge of the first date like you own it, and you surely do. Choose the venue and the time and then ask her whether she will be available.
