The number one symptom of COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) is shortness of breath (dyspnea), especially with physical activity, often described as feeling like you can't get enough air, alongside a persistent cough and increased mucus production. These symptoms develop slowly, are often mistaken for aging or poor fitness, and worsen as the disease progresses.
Common symptoms of COPD include:
In more severe COPD, edema can cause the ankles, legs, and feet to swell. The fluid retention can cause a weight gain of anywhere from 5 to 15 pounds, says Wise. This swelling is due to either pulmonary hypertension or right-sided heart failure.
Bringing up sputum (also called mucus or phlegm) is a sign of COPD. Other examples of signs and symptoms include tiredness or fatigue, chest tightness, shortness of breath and/or frequent lung infections.
Wheezing or whistling sounds when breathing. Ongoing cough that may bring up a lot of mucus. The mucus may be clear, white, yellow or greenish. Chest tightness or heaviness.
Your provider will examine you and use a stethoscope to listen for wheezing or other abnormal chest sounds. Lung function and imaging tests will tell whether you have COPD and how serious it is.
A cough that you've had for a month or more is one of the earliest warning signs of a problem with your respiratory system. Chest pain that gets worse when you breathe in or cough is a warning sign of lung disease, especially if it lasts for a month or more. Mucus is a defense against infections and irritants.
It is no surprise that asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are often mistaken for one another — they are both conditions that affect the lungs and make breathing more difficult.
NUCALA is an add-on, prescription maintenance treatment of eosinophilic chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in adults whose disease is not controlled. NUCALA is not used to treat sudden breathing problems.
As a result, fluid leaks into the surrounding tissues, leading to swelling. Swelling associated with heart failure is usually bilateral, meaning it affects both legs symmetrically.
Starting Your Day With COPD
A shower can be easier to navigate than a bath. Make sure air circulates in your bathroom to remove steam, which will ease your breathing. If shower spray on your face worsens your symptoms, lower the showerhead. Sit down to wash.
COPD: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In patients who experience morning symptoms, the most common morning symptoms were coughing, shortness of breath, and sputum production [3,12,13,23] ( Figure 3 ). Wheezing and chest tightness were common as well [17,23] but were not examined in every study.
stopping smoking – if you have COPD and you smoke, this is the most important thing you can do.
People with COPD can have a cough, chest tightness, wheezing or shortness of breath, and heavy amounts of mucus. Call 911 or go to the closest emergency department if you experience: Difficulty breathing or talking. Chest pains.
Although chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is lung disease that's typically associated with symptoms such as shortness of breath, it can also raise your risk for skin problems that may cause bothersome itching or rashes.
Advair is one of the most commonly used inhalers for the maintenance treatment of COPD. It is a combination of fluticasone, a corticosteroid, and salmeterol, a long-acting bronchodilator. Advair is used on a regular basis for the maintenance treatment of COPD and it is typically taken twice per day.
FDA approves GSK's Nucala in 2025
This made the drug only the second biologic approved for the lung disease, and the third new COPD therapy to gain approval in the U.S. in less than a year. Nucala is a monoclonal antibody that targets and binds to interleukin-5 (IL-5), a key messenger protein in type 2 inflammation.
Reduces harmful molecules: Metformin lowers certain chemicals linked to the ceramide pathway. These chemicals are tied to lung inflammation, COPD flare-ups, and even higher risk of death. By reducing them, metformin may lower those risks.
Chronic lung disease, such as COPD, can cause extreme fatigue because your body is working so much harder to accomplish basic bodily functions like breathing compared to those without lung disease.
Emphysema is a specific type of COPD that involves damage to the air sacs in the lungs. Both COPD and emphysema share similar symptoms, such as shortness of breath, chronic cough, and wheezing, but diagnosis requires medical evaluation and lung function tests.
Treatment for chronic cough
How do you know your lungs are healthy? If your breathing is natural, comes easily and not forced, is steady and makes you feel good, or is so regular you do not notice it at all, your lungs are most likely healthy.
COPD prevents airflow to the lungs, causing breathing problems. The most common types are emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
What stage of COPD do you start losing weight? Weight loss often begins in Stage 3 (Severe COPD) and becomes more pronounced in Stage 4 (Very Severe COPD).
