The "most valuable" thing in the ocean depends on the definition: non-living, it's likely oil and natural gas; in terms of potential undiscovered treasure, the sunken Portuguese ship Flor de Mar (gold, $2.6B) or vast ocean gold (trillions, but impractical); and for rare biologicals, things like ambergris (perfume fixative) or beluga caviar, while the ocean's ecosystem itself (carbon sink, fisheries) holds immense intrinsic value.

The wreck was not found until 1985 by oceanographer Robert Ballard. Unlike previous assumptions, the ship had split in two and much of its cargo was lost or deteriorated. Some items were, however, recovered in good condition and have sold for thousands at auctions.

We have a great deal more to learn about our ocean and what resides within it, but progress IS being made. We learn more and more each year. We continue to discover new features and creatures, clues to our past, and resources that can improve our future. But the ocean will never be fully explored.
