Sepsis mortality with treatment is highly variable but improving, with overall rates around 20-30% for general sepsis, but significantly higher for severe cases like septic shock (over 40-50%), though early, aggressive treatment with antibiotics and supportive care can reduce these rates by as much as 10-15% for each hour of delay, with factors like patient age, comorbidities, and type of infection influencing outcomes.
Sepsis survival rates vary significantly by severity, with mild cases often recovering, but septic shock (the most severe form) carries a high mortality, around 30-40%, though rates can exceed 50% in some studies, with death potentially occurring within hours. Overall, studies show roughly 24% mortality within 30 days for general sepsis and up to 35% for septic shock, but long-term survival is lower, with over half of survivors potentially dying within five years due to post-sepsis complications, though rates vary widely.
Sepsis was once commonly known as “blood poisoning.” It was almost always deadly. Today, even with early treatment, sepsis kills about 1 in 5 affected people. It causes symptoms such as fever, chills, rapid breathing, and confusion.
Introduction. Sepsis with persistent bacteremia (PB) has a mortality rate of about 30 %–45 %, compared to 13.6 % among intensive care unit (ICU) patients without bacteremia. PB is associated not only with high 30-day in-hospital mortality but also with a higher 10-year mortality rate of 75.8 %.
Sepsis is a condition that is responsible for or contributes to up to half of all deaths occurring in hospital. It's estimated that there are 55,000 cases of sepsis resulting in least 8700 deaths in Australia each year, yet few people have heard of sepsis and the prevalence of sepsis is increasing.
The evidence behind the “golden hour” protocol
The main finding was that patients who received antibiotics within the first hour of sepsis recognition had a 79.9% chance of survival. It was also found that with every additional hour, the chance of survival decreased by 7.6%.
Dementia has become the country's leading cause of death, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). The ABS released new figures on Friday that revealed dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, accounted for more than 17,500 deaths (9.4 per cent) in Australia in 2024.
If you have sepsis, you'll need to stay in the hospital until your condition is stable — likely around two weeks. But that can vary greatly depending on your age, overall health, and any complications you experienced.
A higher heart rate at the time of diagnosis of sepsis was found to be related to mortality. A lower mean arterial pressure was observed in the mortality group with borderline significance. Hence, a higher heart rate and a lower mean arterial pressure could predict mortality in severe sepsis.
Recovery varies for everyone individually. While most patients with sepsis recover fully, those patients who go on to develop severe complications such as septic shock may need additional support and possibly rehabilitation on their road to recovery.
Many people die in the months and years after surviving sepsis. But researchers don't know if the increased risk of death is due to previously having sepsis or having an underlying health condition. Because of this and other factors, research studies show varying rates of life expectancy after sepsis.
2. Severe Sepsis. Severe sepsis impacts and impairs blood flow to vital organs, including the brain, heart and kidneys. It can also cause blood clots to form in internal organs, arms, fingers, legs and toes, leading to varying degrees of organ failure and gangrene (tissue death).
You get sepsis when your body has an extreme, damaging reaction to an infection (bacterial, viral, fungal, or parasitic), causing its own immune response to harm tissues and organs, leading to potential organ failure; it starts with any infection, like pneumonia, UTI, or a skin wound, and becomes a medical emergency when the body's defense system overreacts.
Most people make a full recovery from sepsis. But it can take time. You might continue to have physical and emotional symptoms. These can last for months, or even years, after you had sepsis.
Organ failure, including kidney failure, is a hallmark of sepsis. As the body is overwhelmed, its organs begin to shut down, causing even more problems. The kidneys are often among the first to be affected.
How common is it really (or should it be) to have a patient with genuine sepsis discharged to home from the ED? It should be about as common as it is to bill Critical Care Time in the ED for a discharged patient - it happens, but it is rare.
Sepsis is a potentially life-threatening condition that arises when the body's dysregulated response to infection causes injury to its own tissues and organs. Mortality: sepsis ~30%, severe sepsis ~50%, septic shock ~80%.
Sepsis can be triggered by an infection in any part of the body. The most common sites of infection that lead to sepsis are the: lungs.
For example, those sepsis patients that receive prompt antibiotic therapy have a 10–15% lower mortality rate than those who receive antibiotic therapy later in their care [15].
Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
4 in 5 people will not. You may need to be taken to an ICU if you are very ill with sepsis and your organs need support. For example, you may be put on a ventilator. There is a risk you may develop septic shock.
[13, 14] Widespread use of antibiotics not only leads to selection for drug resistance and increases risk for Clostridium difficile infection (CDI), but also may increase a patient's risk for later development of sepsis.
The research discussed here includes the following subset of the core measure sepsis bundle, the components of which must be completed within 3 hours of presentation time: measure serum lactate level, obtain blood cultures before administration of antibiotics, and administer broad spectrum antibiotics.
