There isn't one single "planet-killing" asteroid; rather, it's a category of large Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) like 2022 AP7, a recently discovered (2022) potentially hazardous asteroid (PHA) over 1 km wide, and the famous Apophis, a ~340m rock that will pass very close in 2029 but poses no threat then, both monitored for future risks. The term "planet killer" usually refers to objects massive enough (around 10 km like the one that caused the Chicxulub impact) to cause mass extinctions, with NASA and other agencies constantly tracking many smaller "city-killer" asteroids too, like 2024 ON or 2024 YR4, which are much smaller but still dangerous.
Observations eliminated the possibility of an impact on Earth in 2029, when it will pass the Earth at a distance of about 38,000 kilometres (23,600 mi) above the surface. It will also have a close encounter with the Moon, passing about 96,000 km from the lunar surface.
A 300m-wide asteroid will not hit the Earth in 2036, US astronomers say. It was thought there was a one-in-200,000 chance that it could strike on 13 April 2036, but revised calculations have now ruled this out. Based on new tracking measurements taken this week, the International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN) has confirmed that asteroid 2017 PDC is on a course that will almost certainly impact Earth on July 21, 2027, less than nine years from now.
