The highest-ranking angels are generally considered the Seraphim, who are described in the Bible (Isaiah 6:1-8) as six-winged beings surrounding God's throne, praising Him constantly ("Holy, holy, holy"). In Jewish tradition, Seraphim (or Sarafim) are near the top, while in Christianity, they often form the highest choir in heavenly hierarchies, sometimes alongside Cherubim, with Archangels like Michael being prominent but often in a lower order.
In the fourth century, Saint Basil the Great's homily (De Angelis) placed Saint Michael over all the angels. He was called "Archangel" because he heralds other angels, the title Ἀρχαγγέλος (archangelos) applied to him in Jude 1:9.
