While individual personalities vary, the Valais Blacknose is often cited as one of the friendliest sheep breeds, known for being gentle, people-oriented, and even lap-loving companions, alongside the calm and sweet Shetland and bold, curious Herdwick sheep, all popular choices for smallholders and sanctuaries due to their docile natures.
The Friendliest Breed of Sheep
Originally from the Lake District but often found in Yorkshire too, Herdwicks are curious, sociable, and surprisingly bold. Their woolly faces and intelligent eyes make them favourites among visitors.
I would suggest Tunis sheep. They're known for doing well in warm climates and they have nice wool and really good meat. They're definitely not a dairy breed, although if you just want some milk for personal use I'm sure you could milk them. They're very calm and friendly and have good parasite resistance.
Sheep are friendly to humans and are mostly gentle and quiet. Sheep naturally like to flock together. They will usually follow each other or a leader among them. This trait makes it easy for easier for humans to care for humans to care for a relatively large number of sheep.
Texels, Suffolks and Hampshires (generally most continental breeds and british down / southern breeds) are all pretty docile. The more northern, welsh and scottish hill breeds can be pretty feisty to handle and work with.
Katahdin: Hair sheep breed; low maintenance and adaptable to various environments.
For people that are inexperienced raising sheep or have fewer dollars to spend, it may be a good idea to start with mature ewes (ewes that have previously raised lambs). Mature ewes give birth to more lambs, are better mothers, and produce more milk for their lambs.
Sheep adore human company… if they're treated kindly.
And when they are fortunate enough to know human kindness, they will enthusiastically receive pats, scratches and cuddles from their two-legged companions, and actively seek human company and affection when they have known safety and love.
What should you not feed sheep? You should not overfeed sheep grains, alfalfa, and other fibrous plant materials. Sheep can easily get gaseous and bloated, which can be fatal. Sheep are herbivores and should not be fed meat or animal products like eggs, dog food, or cat food.
To have tame friendly sheep you need to spend time with them on a regular basis, they more time you give them the more confident and relaxed they will be.
Do you begin with a commercial size flock of 200 to 300 ewes or a smaller flock of 20 to 50 ewes. Of course, the feed supply available will be a major contributing factor in this decision. Sheep are not difficult animals to raise; however, they do require a higher level of management than beef cattle.

Long history and tradition are one thing, but the Valais Blacknose sheep are special for other reasons, too. Their small black faces combined with soft white fleece earned them the reputation of 'cutest sheep in the world', with many doubting on first seeing them whether they're actually real and not woolen mascots.
It's important to nurture consent-based interactions and to keep in mind that each individual will have their own preferences when it comes to touch, but you may find your residents sheep enjoy having their chest, back, or the top of their head scratched.
East Friesians are not a very hardy breed. They require lots of high-protein feed to maintain their health, the ewes tend to have triplets or quads, which takes a toll on them and on the shepherds during lambing season, and the lambs are prone to pneumonia.
The most common plants to cause poisoning in sheep are Rhododendron and Pieris which both contain a toxic agent, grayanatoxin. Many home owners purchase the shrubs for their attractive looks, and do not realise how toxic they are.
Forbs are often very nutritious. As compared to cattle, sheep eat a greater variety of plants and select a more nutritious diet, though less so than goats. Sheep will graze for an average of seven hours per day, mostly in the hours around dawn and in the late afternoon, near sunset.
Several sheep disease outbreaks made national news during the 1890s and early 1900s, deepening fears about the safety of eating sheep meat. Americans soon lost not just their taste for sheep meat, but their talent for producing and preparing it.
Disadvantages of Producing Sheep
A sheep enterprise must be well managed. Sheep are subject to predation by coyotes, eagles, bobcats, lions, bears, domestic dogs, etc. Sheep require better fencing than do cattle. Internal parasites can create health problems when sheep are intensively grazed on irrigated pastures.
Happy sheep show their joy through actions like wagging their tails, engaging in playful behaviors such as running, spinning, leaping, and head-butting playfully with flock members, and maintaining a calm, neutral-to-backward ear position.
It is a way for rams to get into physical shape for the breeding season and to establish (or re-establish) the dominance hierarchy. Sheep are the classical flocking animal. They work out a social order by head butting, poking with horns, shoulder pushing, blocking, and mounting.
Inadequate Shelter
Shelter is essential for protecting sheep from extreme weather. Some new farmers underestimate how much shelter is needed. Make sure you provide a clean, dry space that keeps them safe from rain, snow, and wind. Proper ventilation is also important to prevent respiratory issues.
Cattle, horses, sheep, goats, and other grazing animals can see color but lack the full spectrum of vision available to most humans because they have only two-color receptors. They do not see red. They are most attuned to yellowish green and bluish purple hues.
