The scrub python is found throughout the tropical rainforests of far tropical north Queensland. They are the largest snake species to call Australia home. They can reach up to 8 metres (26 feet) long and weigh in excess of 25 kilograms (55 pounds)!
Reaching up to 8 meters long, (that's 26 feet!), and found in the rainforests of tropical north Queensland, the Amethystine Python, or Scrub Python, is not venomous, but is the largest & longest snake species to call Australia home, and one of the longest & largest snakes in the world.
While the reticulated python is a longer snake, it's also slender. Anacondas are bulky. It's estimated that a 5.2-metre-long anaconda would weigh about the same as a 7.3-metre-long reticulated python. Green anacondas are non-venomous, solitary and found in South America and Trinidad.
An invasive predator that can grow up to 20ft, weigh over 100kg and devour prey six times its size – it is enough to make anyone's skin crawl. That's what residents of southern Florida have been struggling with for the past few decades, with the rapid growth of the Burmese python population in the Everglades.
Inland taipan
The world's most venomous snake . In a single bite, the inland taipan produces enough venom to kill 250,000 mice. As notorious as this snake's venom makes it, the inland taipan doesn't exactly 'live up to the hype'.
The eastern brown snake is one of Australia's most dangerous snakes. Found primarily in New South Wales, it causes more deaths than any other snake in the country. Its venom is very potent, making it a big worry for Australians.
A Mount Marlow woman has survived a bite from a coastal taipan, one of the most venomous snakes in Australia. She was flown to hospital in Mackay after being treated with antivenom.
According to the journal Live Science, “Between 1978 and 2009, large constricting snakes killed 16 humans in the United States; at least seven of these deaths were attributed to captive Burmese pythons.”
Florida Distribution
Green anacondas have had relatively few sightings in Florida with a majority of them found around central and north central Florida. They have been reported as far north and Gainesville and as far south as Miami near Everglades City.
In an attempt to defend itself, the invasive snake can inflict painful bites with their sharp teeth and potentially cause significant bleeding. "They are like a mouthful of hyper dermic needles," is how the Python Huntress Amy Siewe described being bitten by a python.
Anacondas are much stronger in water, where they move faster, but on land, the King cobra's quick strikes might give it a brief advantage.
1. Inland Taipan (Oxyuranus microlepidotus) The Inland Taipan, often referred to as the “fierce snake,” has the most powerful venom of all snakes. Found in central Australia, it has a slender build, is typically a light brown or olive shade, and measures about 6 feet (1.8 meters) in length.
The green anaconda is the world's heaviest and one of the world's longest snakes, reaching a length of up to 6.32 m (20 ft 9 in) long.
The coastal taipan is found along the coastal regions of Australia, including northern New South Wales to Queensland, Northern Territory and into the north of Western Australia! They frequent a variety of environments from tropical rainforests, grassy paddocks, cane fields and even sand dunes.
Dugite (Pseudonaja affinis)
The adult is usually olive green to brown, often with dark spots or flecks. The abdomen may also be dark, unlike that of other brown snakes. They are considered more aggressive than the western brown snake (gwardar).
Description. White-crowned snakes are dark brown or steely grey with a white or yellowish stripe across their neck. They can grow to 40cm in length and are venomous but not classed as dangerous.
Threats. At the top of the food chain, adult anacondas have no natural predators. The biggest threat to their survival is human fear; many anacondas are killed by people worried that the enormous snake will attack. They are also hunted for their skin, which is turned into leather or used as decoration.
The eastern diamondback is considered the most dangerous of Florida's six venomous snakes because of its size and the amount of venom it can deliver. That said, bites to humans are rare.
The green anaconda is the largest snake in the world, when both weight and length are considered. It can reach a length of 30 feet (9 meters) and weigh up to 550 pounds (227 kilograms).
New Trial Incentive Program in 2025
An additional incentive is paid for every python removed based on length. $50 for the first four feet and $25 / foot for every foot after four. $200 payment for any verified active python nest. $50 payment for the documented catch and release of any telemetered research pythons.
Considering the known maximum prey size, a full-grown reticulated python can open its jaws wide enough to swallow a human, but the width of the shoulders of some adult Homo sapiens can pose a problem for even a snake with sufficient size.
Black Mamba (Dendroaspis polylepis)
Renowned for its speed and aggression, the black mamba has one of the fastest-acting venoms among snakes. It is responsible for numerous fatalities in sub-Saharan Africa. Time to Fatality: A bite can lead to death within 20 to 30 minutes if no medical intervention occurs.
Coagulopathy can be treated with fresh frozen plasma as there is no antivenom available. Similar to prior recommendations for Heloderma and crotalid bites, patients should be monitored for at least 6 hours for the development of systemic symptoms.
The blood of a US man who deliberately injected himself with snake venom for nearly two decades has led to an "unparalleled" antivenom, say scientists. Antibodies found in Tim Friede's blood have been shown to protect against fatal doses from a wide range of species in animal tests.
