Parasitism in fish is when organisms like protozoa, worms, or crustaceans live on or inside a fish, harming it by taking nutrients, damaging tissues, and causing diseases, which can range from subtle issues like emaciation to severe mortality, especially in crowded conditions, impacting fish health, behavior, and even human health if consumed raw. These parasites can be external (skin, gills) or internal (intestines, muscles) and belong to groups like protozoans, flukes, tapeworms, and nematodes, with common signs including white spots, distended bodies, or unusual swimming.
Tapeworms and Flukes
Several cestodes (tapeworms) and trematodes (flukes) are parasites on freshwater fish. One such tapeworm is Ligula whose life cycle consists of several stages which are parasitic in turn on crustaceans, fish and birds. Fish infected with Ligula exhibit grossly distended abdomens.
While fish are often the subject of parasitological studies as hosts to parasites, fish themselves (or simply just vertebrates in general) are not usually thought of as being parasitic.
The most common parasites of fish are protistans ( see Table: Protistan Parasites of Fish). These include species found on external surfaces and species found in specific organs. Most protistans have direct life cycles.

Anisakid roundworms are the most common parasite found in marine fishes. Other names for these threadlike nematodes are herring worms, cod worms and seal worms. Freshwater perch, trout, and salmon (that spend part of their life in freshwater), may carry the tapeworm larvae of Diphyllobothrium.

Large tuna are considered parasite free and can be purchased raw without being frozen. Certain aquacultured fish, such as salmon, may also be parasite free.
