Kylo Ren's crossguard lightsaber is an ancient design that recalls weapons seen millennia ago during the Great Scourge of Malachor.
Kylo Ren's lightsaber form was something of a hybrid, which blended three styles together: Djem So, Juyo, and Niman. Djem So used an irregular reverse grip and was meant for practitioners who loved fighting with a more offensive edge - a perfect fit for Ren.
Now, in the final issue of Marvel's The Rise of Kylo Ren miniseries, we get to see its origins. We've known for years now that Kylo Ren's lightsaber crackles and sputters the way it does because the kyber crystal that powers its blade is unstable.
The Story of Kylo Ren's Lightsaber Hilt
Ren's crossguard lightsaber is far from unique. Sporting two secondary blades (quillons) protruding from the top of the hilt at 90-degree angles, it is actually based on a design that was created thousands of years before his birth.
The purpose of these blades was to shunt power away from the main blade and to block and catch an opponent's blade. Some variants of the crossguard had only one secondary emitter, at varying angles.
The Forbidden Forms were forms of lightsaber combat used by the Sith during the Sith Wars. According to the testimonies of the Jedi Cervil the Uncanny, lightwhips—a lightsaber variant with a flexible blade—were used to defend against Sith Lords who utilized the forms.
Rey's lightsaber was a yellow-bladed lightsaber that was constructed by the Jedi Rey Skywalker following the First Order-Resistance War.
While he is not Force-sensitive, Grievous has been trained in all forms of lightsaber combat by Count Dooku. Each of his mechanical arms can separate in half, allowing him to wield four lightsabers at once to overwhelm his enemies.

Silver Lightsabers
In Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan Kenobi uses a silver lightsaber when he faces off against his former apprentice, Darth Vader. This represents the end of Kenobi's time as a Jedi and the beginning of his new role as a protector of peace.
During his years as a Jedi, Obi-Wan Kenobi fought with three lightsabers. His first had a blue plasma blade and a hilt similar to that of his master, Qui-Gon Jinn. Obi-Wan used this weapon until Darth Maul kicked it into a deep shaft on Naboo. He then constructed a new, blue-bladed lightsaber with a similar design.
The Sith apprentice Darth Maul wielded a double-bladed lightsaber made by joining two hilts together end-to-end. Maul's dexterity and extensive training allowed him to use his weapon as a single-bladed saber, or to activate both crimson blades and fight multiple opponents at once.
A notable Jar'Kai master was the Priapulin Jedi Master Skwelli, who carried six lightsabers. He was renowned for his skill in his era, and recordings of his fighting form were considered a wonder to behold.
Even though Finn is once again Force-sensitive, and tries to tell Rey about it throughout the film, the film ends without the story addressing his abilities. While fans were left wondering about Finn's Force status, subsequent Lego films have confirmed it, and Finn is already on the road to becoming a Jedi.
In the aftermath of the Battle of Exegol, Rey buried the famed lightsaber alongside Leia Organa's lightsaber, on Tatooine, the desert homeworld of Anakin and Luke.
Black lightsabers are extremely rare in the Star Wars universe, and only a few have been seen on screen. These lightsabers are typically associated with the Dark Side of the Force and wielded by Sith or Dark Jedi. The most well-known black lightsaber is the Darksaber, which was created by the first Mandalorian Jedi.
