Generation Y, also known as Millennials, is a demographic categorization of people born after Generation X and before Generation Z. These people were generally born in the 1980s through the late 1990s and are most often the children of Baby Boomers.
Gen Y: Gen Y, or Millennials, were born between 1981 and 1994/6. They are currently between 25 and 40 years old (72.1 million in the U.S.) Gen Y.1 = 25-29 years old (around 31 million people in the U.S.)

GENERATION Y OR THE MILLENNIALS: DIGITAL NATIVES
The revolution was shaped by the millennials or generation Y. Also known as digital natives, millennials are those born between 1982 and 1994 and technology is part of their everyday lives: all their activities are mediated by a screen.
In August 1993, an Advertising Age editorial coined the phrase Generation Y to describe teenagers of the day, then aged 13–19 (born 1974–1980), who were at the time defined as different from Generation X.
Generation Alpha encompasses those born between 2010 and 2025. Gen Z is the first digital native generation, while Gen Alpha is the first generation to grow up in an entirely digital world.
Gen Y was the obvious choice for the generation that followed. But, once again, the name Gen Y did not stick. The term Millennials is attributed to William Strauss and Neil Howe (First appearing in their 2000 book: “Millennials Rising”). Today we identify millennial's as the first digital generation.
Introducing Generation C
They are a psychographic group (instead of a demographic group) bound by values, interests, personality traits, attitudes, and lifestyles – not when they were born. Members of Generation C are “digital natives” who have integrated technology into every aspect of their daily routine.
Characteristics of Generation Y
Generation Y can be confident and ambitious. They are not afraid to question authority, are constantly seeking out new challenges and want meaningful work. Generation Y people typically want to be part of a team, but at the same time they desire to be in the spotlight.
Millennials or Generation Y
This often refers to the set of adults, who are most adept at using the internet and are constantly evolving in terms of technology. They are also called the generation that constantly strives to have a good work-life balance.
Zoomer is used to refer to members of Generation Z, or people born in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The term is modeled on boomer, a common shortening of baby boomer, and earlier use of zoomer referred to physically active baby boomers.
The Greatest Generation commonly refers to those Americans who were born in the 1900s through the 1920s. The Greatest Generation members all lived through the Great Depression and many of them fought in World War II. These individuals have often been described as driven, patriotic, and team-players.
Generation X, or Gen X, is a term typically used to describe the generation of Americans born between 1965 and 1980, although some sources use slightly different ranges. Generation X follows the baby boomer generation and precedes the millennial generation.
The Silent Generation, also known as the Traditionalist Generation, is the Western demographic cohort following the Greatest Generation and preceding the baby boomers. The generation is generally defined as people born from 1928 to 1945.
Both generations want to know what the opportunities are for their own career development and advancement. While Gen Y seek new opportunities, Gen Z's want new experiences. Both can be catered for by thinking broader within the scope of your business.
Sociologist & BU professor Deborah Carr defines Zillennials as those born "roughly" between 1992 and 2002. Fullscreen, LLC defines the Millennial/Gen Z cusp group as those born from approximately 1993 to 1999 in their research.
Generational definitions are most useful when they span a set age range and so allow meaningful comparisons across generations. That is why the generations today each span 15 years with Generation Y (Millennials) born from 1980 to 1994; Generation Z from 1995 to 2009 and Generation Alpha from 2010 to 2024.
So it follows that Generation Beta will be born from 2025 to 2039. If the nomenclature sticks, then we will afterwards have Generation Gamma (the children of Generation Alpha) and Generation Delta, but we won't be getting there until the second half of the 21st century!
Born between the late 1950s and the early 1960s, they have been christened “Generation B.” Just don't call them old.
