Intelligence Services Act 2001
The Act sets out the functions of ASIS and the limits on those functions. Use of weapons by ASIS was prohibited (except for self-defence). Conduct of violent or para-military operations was also curtailed. The Act authorised the responsible minister to issue directions to the agency.

Australian Secret Intelligence Service (ASIS)
The main difference between the two intelligence agencies is that while ASIS's function relates to obtaining foreign intelligence, ASIO's function primarily involves security intelligence from within Australia.
Tertiary degree or currently undertaking tertiary studies and due to complete these studies within the next 12 months; or significant relevant work experience. Overseas experience is desriable but not mandatory.
The average ASIO salary ranges from approximately $77,898 per year for Information Manager to $152,972 per year for Software Architect.
ASIS is accountable to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator the Hon Penny Wong.
