"Red" most commonly refers to a color at the long-wavelength end of the visible spectrum, but it's also slang for communism/socialism, a radical/revolutionary person, or being "in the red" (in debt). It symbolizes passion, anger, danger, love, and vitality, used in art, politics (Soviet flag), and finance (red ink for losses).

Linguistic evidence indicates that, while some tribes may have used red to refer to themselves during the pre-Columbian era based upon their origin stories, the general use of the term was in response to meeting people who called themselves white and their slaves black.
