Washing at a temperature above 130 °F will generally kill the insects. Alternately, try sealing the fabrics in plastic bags for 2 weeks. Soaking combs, brushes, and other hair care items in hot water for 5–10 minutes. Vacuuming the furniture, floor, and other surfaces that may contain lice or their eggs.
Use heat. Wash any items used or worn by the person in hot water, and dry them on high heat. Lice and nits die when exposed to temperatures higher than 130 F for more than 5 minutes.
Soak your child's head in olive oil or coconut oil. Cover with a shower cap for at least 2 hours (or preferably overnight). When ready, remove the shower cap, and separate the hair into small sections, then use a metal nit comb to carefully remove the lice and eggs. Rinse the hair well with shampoo.
Lice and nits can be removed by wet combing. You can buy a special fine-toothed comb (detection comb) online or from pharmacies to remove head lice and nits. There may be instructions on the pack, but usually you: wash hair with ordinary shampoo.
Vinegar is one of the classic home remedies for lice. However, if you are trying to find out how to get rid of nits using vinegar, you should know that using vinegar to kill nits or lice eggs is totally ineffective. Vinegar has no negative effect on the lice eggs.
Try the Apple Cider Vinegar and Olive Oil Tandem
After an hour, comb out your hair using a nit comb and pick out the lice and their eggs. Wash your hair with a little shampoo and rinse it with warm water. After that, soak your hair with the apple cider vinegar then cover it with a shower cap.
Rinse hair thoroughly with warm water. Apple cider vinegar can also be used as an alternative. Mix half a cup of apple cider vinegar with half a cup of water and apply this on the head. Use a nit comb to remove lice, and then wash off your hair with warm water.
It is not usually possible to get rid of lice in one day, as an infestation needs to be treated. However, there are treatments that can help get rid of lice and symptoms caused by lice more quickly. Lice infestations must first be treated by improving the hygiene of the infected person.
Spinosad topical suspension, 0.9%, was approved by the FDA in 2011. Since it kills live lice as well as unhatched eggs, retreatment is usually not needed. Nit combing is not required. Spinosad topical suspension is approved for the treatment of children 6 months of age and older.
First off, here's what not to do: don't shave your or your child's head, or coat it with petroleum jelly or mayonnaise or anything else designed to "suffocate" the parasite. You'll probably end up with greasy, smelly, lice-infested hair.
PREVENTING LICE FROM HATCHING
As such, the only way to prevent nits from hatching is to physically remove each one, one at a time. In order to remove nits, use a metal nit comb or, if you do not have access to one, your fingertips.
Coconut, tea tree oil, lavender, eucalyptus, rosemary, lemon grass, and peppermint are scents popularly believed to repel lice. Using any coconut scented shampoo and conditioner is an easy way to increase your defense. At 1% concentration, tea tree oil killed 100% of head lice after 30 minutes.
Sometimes it will be easier to remove the nits if you wet the hair with white vinegar while you are combing the nits out. Vinegar helps loosen the "glue" that holds the nits to the hair. Separate and comb small sections of hair at a time.
Olive Oil smothers and kills active head lice, making nit removal easier and moisturizing the hair and scalp. Part hair and apply the oil directly onto the scalp. Massage into the entire scalp making sure to saturate the hair. Apply a shower cap.
Mix 1 cup of vinegar with 1 cup of warm water. Next, distribute this mixture onto the scalp and cover your hair with a hair cap. Let this sit for approximately 30 minutes. Then, wash your hair normally with your usual shampoo.
Rinsing the hair with white vinegar before washing may help dissolve the glue that holds the nits to the hair shafts.
Step 3: Use the White vinegar to saturate the hair (*this will loosen the glue the nits use to stick to the hair), apply shower cap and leave on for 1-2 hours. Step 4: Rinse out the vinegar. Step 5: Comb out all the nits/eggs; use provided comb or lice comb.
Parents can either mix three to five drops of tea tree oil to every ounce of shampoo, or combine three tablespoons of carrier oil — like olive or coconut — with a teaspoon of tea tree oil and apply to infested hair for 30 to 40 minutes.
KILL LICE: OIL AND VINEGAR MIXTURE
1. Mix together one cup oil and one cup white vinegar. 2. Pour mixture onto the hair and scalp.
Pro tip: While apple vinegar is great for strengthening tresses, it's also a very powerful ingredient that has the potential to damage hair if it isn't diluted sufficiently. Too-frequent use can also harm hair.
A preventative shampoo and spray can break the life cycle. A shampoo that kills lice before they can lay eggs is critical for closing the “bridge” from one head to another.
Can someone have nits but no lice? It may be possible to have nits but no lice. If a person cannot find any nymphs or adult lice in the scalp and the nits are more than a quarter of an inch from the scalp, these may be dead and from an old infestation. However, the lice could be in hiding.
