Adding water to air-dry clay changes its consistency: a little water smooths surfaces and creates a gluey "slip" for joining pieces, while too much water weakens the clay, making it soggy, difficult to work with, and prone to cracking or crumbling as it dries, though it can be used to rehydrate dry clay by soaking it. It's not advised to put air dry clay in water, even if cured with resin, as it will break down the clay. Resin will make it water resistant but not water proof. It unfortunately won't be completely non-porous even if cured with resin.

Carmen McKinney I use cooking spray. It doesn't hurt the clay. It works great!!! I spray a little in a cup and use a paintbrush to out it on cookie cutters or in molds.

For extra durability and to really make the air dry clay look like ceramic, you can seal the clay with Gloss Modge Podge. The gloss mimics the glaze that is typically seen on authentic ceramic pieces.

A hairdryer on the air-dry clay will absorb all the moisture, significantly speeding up its drying procedure. Hence, using a hairdryer will save you time and deliver stunning, natural-looking results as would have been if it had been dried naturally.
Freezing the clay hardens it enough to make the spray stick while you move it around to get all the nooks and crannies.
You will end up with not just dried clay, but a cracked bowl too. Keep your air dry clay piece small. The larger the piece, the higher the risk of uneven heating, which can lead to all sorts of problems. Use short bursts of low power.

Air dry clay and any sealers used are considered flammable and not food safe. If you want something that can take the heat or be food safe, find a ceramic or pottery studio close to you and make your piece there.
