Do not allow your cat to lick or scratch the incision, as he may pull the sutures out and could introduce an infection into the incision. If the incision is not bandaged, inspect it at least twice daily.
The best way to get your pet to stop is to get an Elizabethan (or “E”) collar, AKA “Lampshade”, or “Cone of Shame”. These stay on your pet during the healing cycle and prevent your pet from licking.
Alternatives to the “cone of shame” are inflatable collars, soft E-collars and neck brace collars. Try covering the wound with soft fabric secured by medical tape to prevent licking. Keep pets busy with other fun things to distract them from licking wounds.
IF your pet was NEUTERED today:
There are 2 open incisions over your pet's scrotum. These wounds will heal by themselves—please do not clean/wipe/soak these incisions.

At SNAP male dogs have been neutered by a scrotal approach. You may notice an open skin incision on the scrotum, this is normal. The tissue will heal from the inside out in 7 to 10 days.

As anyone knows, it's important to keep a wound clean so in that way licking has its advantages. Furthermore, cat saliva contains compounds that can aid the healing process. A few compounds contained in cat saliva such as opiorphin, peroxidase, lactoferrin, and thrombospondin act as a pain reliever and antibacterial.
An infected spay incision will likely be quite red and swollen. You may also observe drainage from the area, including blood or purulent discharge. Sutures may be missing and you may even notice underlying tissue protruding from the wound.
Restricting Movement - Keep Your Cat From Jumping!
Your vet will likely recommend limiting your pet's movement for a specified period (usually a week) after surgery. Sudden jumping or stretching can disrupt the healing process and may even cause the incision to reopen.
Flexible fabric E-collars: Soft and flexible yet keep most dogs away from their wound site. Neck control collars: Immobilize your dog's neck so he can't access the surgical site. Inflatable E-collars: Puffy and padded but not the best option for determined chewers.
Try a light, loose cotton T-shirt, some boxer shorts or a clean sock, depending on the area affected.
If the incision looks dirty you can gently clean the area with a cotton ball and warm water. Do not use Hydrogen Peroxide. You must not allow your dog or cat to get wet for at least 7 days after surgery. For this reason, bathing is also prohibited for at least one week after surgery.
It takes approximately 24 to 48 hours for your cat's nausea to go away and for their appetite to fully return, but it will take roughly 7 days for your male cat to recover completely after being neutered.
It is important to ensure that your cat's wound stays clean to prevent further infection. As cats are natural groomers in order to prevent your cat from licking the wound or pulling at the bandage I would recommend using a Kong EZ soft collar.
Cat scratch disease is caused by a bacterium carried in the cat saliva. The bacteria are passed from an infected cat to a human after the cat licks an open wound or bites or scratches human skin hard enough to break the surface of the skin.
Cat wounds should always be assessed by a veterinarian unless they are superficial and seem to be healing quickly. The average healing time for a superficial abrasion is 7 days, and you should see improvement daily.
Forelimb wounds: Long-sleeved T-shirts knotted at the waist to secure them are a handy way to protect sutures located on your pet's forelimb. Abdomen wounds: Short-sleeved T-shirts knotted at the waist are a good way to protect sutures located on your pet's abdomen.
The neutered cat no longer feels the need to seek out and serenade females. He no longer has the stress of needing to mark his territory and urinate throughout the house and yard. Neutered cats are also easier to get along with. They tend to more gentle and affectionate.
Patients can eat, drink, pee, poop, and sleep with a cone on. In fact, the stricter you are with the cone, the quicker they will get used to it. In addition, pets do not hold grudges, so they will not be mad at you for being strict with the rules. If the incision is over the chest or belly, a T-shirt may be worn.
An average incision typically takes 10-14 days to fully heal. This means remaining disciplined as a pet owner and keeping your pet's e-collar on while limiting her activity levels for at least 2 weeks following the surgery is a must.
There are key signs that indicate that your pup's incision is healing well, which include: Closed incision edges. Pinkish skin surrounding the incision edges (this is a normal part of the inflammation process)
Most spay/neuter skin incisions are fully healed within about 10–14 days, which coincides with the time that stitches or staples, if any, will need to be removed. Don't bathe your pet or let them swim until their stitches or staples have been removed and your veterinarian has cleared you to do so.
The cone should stay on until the site is fully healed, and/or the sutures are removed. Most sutures and staples are left in for 10-14 days. Other lesions may take less or more time than that to heal completely.
