The common symptoms of a rat bite are pain, redness, swelling around the bite and, if secondary infection occurs, a weeping, pus-filled wound. Other rat bite symptoms may include those associated with bacterial infections known as streptobacillary rat bite fever and spirillary rat bite fever.
If you are bitten or scratched, immediately clean the wound with soap and warm water.
Wild rats are not used to human contact and will bite when handled or when people attempt to feed them by hand. The nocturnal creatures have also been known to bite sleeping people, particularly children and infants, on exposed body parts such as fingers, hands, toes and the face when foraging for food.

Playtime & Exercise – Rats are nocturnal, or most active at nighttime. Since rats are very social creatures, most of their activity and playtime will be at night. One thing to note on these social creatures: they tend to live in packs of various sizes – so where there is one, there will many more!
If you develop any of the signs and symptoms of RBF after coming in contact with rats or other rodents, immediately contact a health care provider. Make sure to tell your provider about your contact with rodents. If your provider suspects that you have RBF, he or she will treat you with antibiotics.
Small rodents (like squirrels, hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils, chipmunks, rats, and mice) and lagomorphs (including rabbits and hares) are almost never found to be infected with rabies and have not been known to transmit rabies to humans.

On a cotton ball use no more than 5 drops of 100% peppermint essential oil. Spread the oil on areas that you want rats to avoid, in your case, around the garden.
