About 20 minutes after an Irukandji sting, the victim will likely be experiencing the rapid onset of severe, systemic symptoms known as Irukandji syndrome, which can be life-threatening. The initial sting itself may have been minor or even unnoticed.
The person may or may not feel a mild pain at the sting site and develop a goose bump-like skin reaction. After about 30 minutes symptoms worsen to include severe limb, abdominal and back pain, anxiety, headache, vomiting, profuse sweating and sometimes difficulty breathing.

The box jellyfish (like the Sea Wasp) is generally considered more immediately dangerous due to its larger size, longer tentacles, and ability to cause rapid death (minutes) from cardiac arrest, while the tiny Irukandji (a type of box jellyfish) has more potent venom per volume and causes "Irukandji syndrome" with delayed, severe pain, muscle cramps, and blood pressure spikes, but is less likely to kill as quickly unless many stings occur. Box jellyfish kill faster, but Irukandji venom is incredibly potent, though often requires multiple stings to be fatal.

Irukandji syndrome is produced by a small amount of venom and induces excruciating muscle cramps in the arms and legs, severe pain in the back and kidneys, a burning sensation of the skin and face, headaches, nausea, restlessness, sweating, vomiting, and an increase in heart rate and blood pressure.
In up to 60% of cases an itchy bumpy rash can occur 1-2 weeks later at the site of the sting. This 'delayed reaction' can be intensely itchy. The rash usually resolves within 10 days although it may occasionally persist for weeks.
Urine is actually water-based, so it doesn't contain enough ammonia to deactivate the toxin. In other words, pee will not help the pain. It's unsanitary and can make the pain worse, because pressure from the urination can cause the barbs to release more toxins.
Most jellyfish stings are harmless. But some jellyfish stings can cause serious harm. If you, or someone you're with, are stung, get help right away. If you're experiencing life-threatening symptoms such as difficulty breathing, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room.

Douse the sting site with vinegar as soon as possible for at least 30 seconds. Vinegar inactivates the stinging cells, preventing them from injecting more venom. Monitor the casualty and seek further medical assistance if available.
While the Irukandji species is not rare in tropical environments, being stung is uncommon. Mr Ahtong said there were six recorded stings in the past five years.
As well as dousing jellyfish stings with vinegar or hot water, the new EMS policy says lifeguards should scrape venom sacs from the skin. Clark said if lifeguards aren't in sight, beachgoers could remove the sacs in a pinch, as long as they're careful.
A dead jellyfish still can sting, so wear sandals even on the sand. If you're stung, rinse off the affected area using either seawater or hot tap water. This will help remove the stinging cells the jellyfish can leave.
Others suggest wearing a waterproof moisturizer such as zinc oxide or thick layers of Vaseline to block the stings. Israeli researchers have also developed a lotion that, they say, borrows from mechanisms found in the clown fish and can prevent jellyfish stings.
Experts have found that these little creatures can learn - even though they don't have a brain. They discovered that jellyfish are capable of changing their behaviour based on previous experiences - something that's never been seen before in other similar species.
