The formerly independent Breyer Ice Cream Company was sold to the National Dairy Products Corporation/Sealtest in 1926. National Dairy then changed its name to Kraftco in 1968, and Kraft by 1975. Kraft sold its ice cream brands to Unilever in 1993, while retaining the rights to the name for yogurt products.
Unilever NV bought the company in 1993 then ditched Philadelphia shortly thereafter. It's been almost two decades since Breyer's manufactured ice cream in Philadelphia. The plant had been in operation for about 71 years when Unilever NV shuttered it in 1995.
When William Breyer started his small ice cream business in Philadelphia in 1866, he based his recipes around simple and pure ingredients. Breyers® Natural Vanilla ice cream today still holds true to his ideals.
Basically, some of Breyers' flavors fail to meet a basic criteria for ice cream set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture: One, that the dessert is make up of 10 percent milkfat, and that the ice cream has an overrun of 100 percent or less—that is, the ice cream shouldn't be mostly made of more than 50 percent air ...
Butter pecan and other popular Breyers flavors like cookies & cream, chocolate chip cookie dough and rocky road are now called frozen dairy dessert. The change in name is because Breyers changed the ingredients and legally they can no longer call their product ice cream.
Confusion with Dreyer's
The root of the confusion dates to 1953, when "Edy's Grand Ice Cream" was changed to "Dreyer's Grand Ice Cream". Seeking to eliminate the confusion this created, Dreyer's changed its brand name in the home market of Breyers from "Dreyer's Grand" back to "Edy's Grand" in 1981.
As a result, some time later, in 1976, National Dairy Products would come to be known as Kraft, Inc. Don't make the mistake of assuming that Breyers is now a Kraft product though: Kraft sold Breyers to Unilever in 1993, and now Breyers is part of Unilever's Good Humor-Breyers Ice Cream Company.
