"MI5/MI6" were the original designations when both organisations came under the War Office, now the MOD - "MI" stands for military intelligence. Their official names (acquired in the 30s) are the Security Service (MI5) and SIS, the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6).
M is the head of MI6 and stands for for "Missions" – to identify that the incumbent is the head of the Missions Department. M is not one character, but rather a role that has been held by various characters across the 25 films.
Q is a fictional character in the James Bond films and film novelisations. Q (standing for Quartermaster), like M, is a job title rather than a name. He is the head of Q Branch (or later Q Division), the fictional research and development division of the British Secret Service.
The tradition began 100 years ago when the first head of MI6, Captain Sir Mansfield Cumming, signed himself C after his surname. C now stands for Chief.
And in 'Skyfall', Kincaid the groundskeeper refers to her as Emma, although many fans believe this is because he believes Bond to be calling her 'Em'.
M is a codename held by a number of fictional characters in Ian Fleming's James Bond book and film series; the characters are the current or past Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service, the agency known as MI6.
Suddenly, it all made sense. Silva, thought to be in Hong Kong, was M's son – adopted, possibly, but undeniably her son.
In the first novel, Casino Royale, and the 2006 film adaptation, the 00 concept is introduced and, in Bond's words, means "that you've had to kill a chap in cold blood in the course of some assignment". Bond's 00 number (007) was awarded to him because he twice killed in fulfilling assignments.
Mathilde Swann is the daughter of Madeleine Swann and James Bond. Portrayed by child actress, Lisa-Dorah Sonnet, the character appeared in the 2021 James Bond film, No Time To Die.
George (T.R. Knight) nearly kills a patient during his first appendectomy, leading to everyone calling him “007” because he has a license to kill. After George gets hit by a bus and is injured beyond recognition, he writes “007” on Meredith's hand to identify himself. 4.
The main female lead here is the formidable M (Judi Dench), Bond's boss and the head of MI6. M is referred to by her agents as "Mum," and Skyfall is—very atypically for a Bond film—focused not only on women as sex objects, but also on women as mothers.
The character of Q, a technology expert, has always been played by a man in the Bond films. Speaking at the Women in IT awards on Wednesday, Mr Younger said: "The real-life Q is looking forward to meeting you and I'm pleased to report that the real-life Q is a woman."
Skyfall wasn't a real building (or really Scottish)
The name Skyfall comes from the name of Bond's ancestral home in Scotland. That wasn't a real building, though. It was a full-scale model made of plaster and plywood. In fact, it wasn't even built on Scotland.
Fictional MI6 agent James Bond possesses the Licence to Kill which is why he is a '00' agent. The '7' means Bond is the seventh agent to receive this title. Bond qualified for it after he killed traitors MI6 section chief Dryden and his associate Fisher (as seen in 'Casino Royale').
Some historians link the 00 designations to Fleming's World War II service as a real-life Naval officer working in British military intelligence in the 1940s. Fleming worked as the assistant to Rear Admiral John Godfrey, who is believed to be the inspiration for 'M'.
The head of MI6 has revealed he only writes in green ink, whether on paper or on his computer, in homage to a tradition established by the very first 'C', who set up the intelligence service over a century ago.
The character as he was originally imagined by author Ian Fleming is much more grounded in reality. In fact, though Bond is not an actual historical figure, the agent does happen to have some real-world inspirations. Even his 007 designation has some historical significance.
Madeline Swann is the daughter of Mr. White, a member of the criminal organization Spectre. As a young child in Norway, Swann witnessed the death of her mother at the hands of Lyutsifer Safin. Safin murdered Swann's mother as vengeance for Mr. White killing Safin's entire family under orders from Ernst Stavro Blofeld.
Teresa “Tracy” Di Vicenzo (Diana Rigg) is the only woman ever to marry James Bond. Her first husband, an Italian count died in a car crash, an event that has fed her fatalistic approach to life.
In Fleming's books, there are only five double 0 agents: 006, 007, 008, 009, and 0011. Two of them are named: 007 is Bond, of course, and, in Moonraker, there's mention of agent 008 as a guy named Bill.

Sean Connery the first guy to ever play Agent 007 in the James Bond film franchise is also the actor who played the character for the longest time.
Unfortunately, M dies from a gunshot wound—not even from Silva. Quite an ignominious way to go after such a dramatic struggle. But M gives Bond a quantum of solace, if you will, with her final words. She looks at him and says, "I did get one thing right."
He is a former MI6 agent who was betrayed by M when she turned him over to the Chinese government in 1997 during a mission in Hong Kong. Fifteen years later, Silva commits a series of terrorist attacks as part of a larger plan to publicly discredit and kill her as reveng for her betrayel.
Dench's head of MI6 dies at the hand of a long-standing foe Silva (Javier Bardem) at the film's dramatic climax, and in Mendes' eyes it was more emotionally powerful than fazing her out between eras (as had happened when Dench took on the role from Robert Brown in 1995's GoldenEye).
