In Chinese, Gen Z (Generation Z) means Z世代 (Z shìdài), referring to the cohort born roughly between the mid-1990s (around 1996-1998) and the early 2010s (around 2010-2014), also known as the "00后 (00 hòu)" or post-2000s generation, characterized by being digital natives growing up in China's rapid economic boom, making them optimistic, individualistic, tech-savvy consumers focused on quality of life and self-expression, even while navigating societal pressures like "lying flat" (tangping).
“China's Generation Z are the first Chinese generation to be born in a fully digital age,” said Adam Xu, Partner, OC&C Strategy Consultants. “They are an extremely tech-savvy crowd, willing to share their feelings and experiences in forms of online reviews, blog posts and other means of self-expression.
Saying words (left part文) while you are moving along indicates it is here and now and extended to mean THIS 这 (zhè). “车” (chē) means “car”, so “这车” is “this car”.
Gen Z refers to people born between 1995 and 2010. The 'Z' in the name means "zoomer", as this is the first generation known to 'zoom' the internet.
Gen Z slang uses internet-driven, often ironic terms to describe feelings, people, and situations, with popular examples including "rizz" (charisma), "drip" (style), "bet" (yes/okay), "no cap" (no lie), "bussin" (delicious/good), "mid" (average/bad), and "slay" (to do something exceptionally well). These phrases, heavily influenced by social media and AAVE, allow for quick, expressive communication, often using single words or short phrases to convey complex ideas.
Whilst boomers and millennials may use the 😂 emoji, this has long since been deemed 'uncool' (or 'cheugy') by Gen Z. Instead, this has been replaced by the skull (💀) or the crying emoji (😭), dramatising the idea of 'dying with laughter'.
Bae – Boyfriend or girlfriend.
Happiness and personal values. The Economist has described Generation Z as a more educated, well-behaved, stressed and depressed generation in comparison to previous generations.
Donald Trump is a Baby Boomer, born on June 14, 1946, making him one of the first in that generation, which typically spans 1946-1964; the Silent Generation precedes this, generally from 1925-1945, with President Joe Biden representing the latter. While Trump shares some traits with the broader Boomer demographic, his formative experiences as a wealthy individual diverged from many of his peers, though he later became a significant political figure for many in the generation.
From water and power shortages in Madagascar to pension reforms in Peru and nepotism and corruption in Nepal, the root causes of the protests differed, but the essence was shared — Gen Z is protesting poor governance that does not speak for them.
哥哥 – Gēgē
In many Western cultures, referring to a guy you are dating as your “older brother” or 哥哥 gēgē might feel a little uncomfortable. But in China, it is normal for a Chinese girl to call her boyfriend that way. This is a typical Chinese nickname for guys.
It means acknowledging the kindness given between individuals. Mandarin Chinese, a widely spoken language in China, has numerous ways to say thank you in different contexts. While “xiè xie” (谢谢) is the most common phrase for saying “thank you very much” in daily interactions, it has its limitations.
Zhu is a masculine name of Chinese origin, meaning "upright." As a surname, it is a household name due to its affiliation with the Ming dynasty emperors.
"The data reveals that Gen Z globally holds a positive and pragmatic perception of China. They recognize its developmental achievements, show strong interest in its technology, culture, and future prospects, and express a clear willingness to visit, experience, and engage with the country," he added.
The largest ethnic groups: The Han and Zhuang
Han Chinese represent more than 90% of China's population and roughly 20% of the world's population, around 1.1 billion people. Han Chinese derive from the Han Dynasty, which ruled for 400 years, making it the longest-ruling empire in China's history.
China's "3-hour rule" for minors restricts children under 18 to playing online video games for only three hours per week, specifically from 8 PM to 9 PM on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, to combat gaming addiction and improve health. Implemented by the National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA) in 2021, the rule mandates gaming companies use real-name verification and facial recognition to enforce limits, though some children bypass it using adult accounts.
Recent research shows that members of the Baby Boomer generation have worse health than previous generations did at the same ages—diabetes, heart disease and other chronic illnesses are more common.
There's no single "toughest" generation, as each faces unique struggles, but Generation X (born 1965-1980) is often cited as the most stressed due to balancing work, family, and finances while facing economic uncertainty, yet they also show high resilience, while younger generations like Gen Z grapple with unprecedented housing costs and climate anxiety, making the definition of "tough" subjective and dependent on the specific challenges faced.
The four most commonly discussed generations today, moving from oldest to youngest, are Baby Boomers (1946-1964), Generation X (1965-1980), Millennials (Gen Y, 1981-1996), and Generation Z (1997-2012), with the newer Generation Alpha (2010s-mid-2020s) following Gen Z, all defined by distinct cultural and technological experiences shaping their values and behaviors.
Across much of the world, it is no longer middle-aged adults who are the most miserable. Instead, young people, especially Gen Z, are reporting the highest levels of unhappiness of any age group.
For Gen Z, the 😭 (Loudly Crying Face) emoji usually means something is overwhelmingly funny, cute, or heartwarming, signifying "crying with laughter" or being emotionally moved, rather than actual sadness, often replacing the older 😂 emoji for intense amusement. It's used for exaggerated, positive reactions to things like relatable humor, adorable pets, or touching moments.
It seems likely there is a greater tendency in Gen Zers to struggle with their mental health. This is supported by one study, which found: Fewer than half (47%) of Gen Zers say they're content with their lives compared to 60% of Millennials.
But it does provide some rough guidelines as to how soon may be too soon to make long-term commitments and how long may be too long to stick with a relationship. Each of the three numbers—three, six, and nine—stands for the month that a different common stage of a relationship tends to end.
