He is referring to himself as a dead dog. Worthless, crippled, insignificant, broken, perhaps an enemy of the King. Not a nice thought to think about. Despite this he was honoured to always have a place at the Kings table, treated like one of King David's own sons and given land for his family.

Metaphorically speaking, the dog signifies worthlessness and offence. Abner is offended by Ish- Bosheth, “Am I a dog's head – on Judah's side? This very day I am loyal to the house of your father Saul and to his family and friends.” (2 Sam 3:8).
8 And he bowed himself, and said, What [is] thy servant, that thou shouldst look upon such a dead dog as I [am]? 8 He did obeisance, and said, What is your servant, that you should look on such a dead dog as I am?
Philippians 3:2: “Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision.” Proverbs 26:11: “As a dog returneth to his vomit, [so] a fool returneth to his folly.” Luke 16:21: “And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.”
Dog: Spiritual Significance. The Dog Spirit is one with broad spiritual implications. It represents family, adaptability, affection, devotion, perseverance, bravery, insightfulness, and knowing one's purpose. At the beginning of the Canine-human relationship, these creatures followed nomadic hunting excursions.
Towards the end of the book, I talk about a play on the Hebrew word for a dog, which is 'kelev'. The second syllable of the word 'lev' means 'heart', and 'ke' is 'like', so it's 'like the heart'.
Ecclesiastes 3:18-20
All go to one place. All are from the dust, and to dust all return. This verse may be the most appropriate when attempting to ensure a grieving pet-parent that their pet is in Heaven, as it plainly states, "all go to one place."
Christians don't believe that "going to heaven" happens automatically; it's the result of conscious decisions made during one's life. While the Bible is very specific about the requirements for human salvation, it says nothing about salvation for animals.

Scholars usually understand the "dogs." listed among those outsiders to the holy city in Revelation 22:14-15, as a metaphor for false teachers or immoral practitioners.

Once breathing and heartbeat have stopped for 30 minutes after a natural death, pet parents can be assured that their dog has passed away. After death, there may be some brief muscle twitching, a last deep exhale, and loss of bladder and bowel control as the muscles relax.
The most common connotations connected to dead animals include change, progression, decisions, processing (or re-processing) and phases. One of the first ways of approaching this situation is by noting where the creature is, anything nearby that may influence the meaning, the time of day/date and even weather.

If you found the dead dog during normal business hours, call the vet's office to help you through the process of disposing of the body. The veterinarian can also provide you with contact numbers of a person who can pick up the body of the dog, such as a mobile vet service or a pet crematory.
While religious views around the world vary, Christianity has traditionally held that animals have no hope of an afterlife. But Pope John Paul II said in 1990 that animals do have souls and are “as near to God as men are”.
According to Hinduism, when a dog dies, its soul is reborn again as a human, animal, or plant, depending on the karma it has accumulated in its past life. In Buddhism, dogs are believed to have the same afterlife as any other sentient being, returning to the cycle of rebirth until they can reach enlightenment.

Are you looking for peace regarding the death of your pet? Consider this often-quoted passage from the Bible, which says, “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
"`If an animal that you are allowed to eat dies, anyone who touches the carcass will be unclean till evening. Anyone who eats some of the carcass must wash his clothes, and he will be unclean till evening. Anyone who picks up the carcass must wash his clothes, and he will be unclean till evening.
Some people find grief following the loss of a pet comes in stages, where they experience different feelings such as denial, anger, guilt, depression, and eventually acceptance and resolution. Others find that their grief is more cyclical, coming in waves, or a series of highs and lows.
In Hinduism, dogs are messengers for the god of death.
And Dog lived with Adam and Eve and was a companion to them and loved them. And they were comforted. And God was pleased.
The dogs and pigs represent hostile, unworthy people. And so the statement translates into something like this: Do not preach the things of God to hostile, unworthy people. This interpretation is often presented as a sort of counterbalance to the previous verses where Jesus warns against judging others.
