What is 'blood rain'? It's understood that blood rain occurs when relatively high concentrations of red coloured dust or particles get mixed into rain, giving it a red appearance as it falls.
A well-documented incident of "blood rain" happened in 2001 in the southern Indian state of Kerala. In the middle of a monsoon red rain started to fall and did so intermittently for several weeks. The colour was strong enough to stain clothes.
Recorded instances of blood rain usually cover small areas. The duration can vary, sometimes lasting only a short time, others several days. By the 17th century, explanations for the phenomenon had moved away from the supernatural and attempted to provide natural reasons.
