This is dysentery. Claire tells everyone that a contaminated water source most likely caused it, but after funeral upon funeral — the body count is high! — no one can seem to figure it out. And then Claire falls ill.
To be more specific, it is amoebic dysentery, which Claire (Caitriona Balfe) confirms with her makeshift microscope. The disease can be spread through contaminated food or water, and Jamie (Sam Heughan) eventually learns that it was a dead elk lying in the water that the fisherfolk use that caused the disease.
Director Brendan Maher told Vulture that while both Menzies and Heughan had stunt doubles for the physically demanding sequence, neither used them much. “We had people for safety, just in case, but the nature of the work is that you want the actors to do as much as they possibly can,” Maher said.
Jamie denies having slept with her, but the damage to his and to Claire's reputation is done—and the bond between the Frasers and Malva is severed, until just a few weeks later, when Claire finds Malva murdered in the garden. “It's like the peak of the tragedy, and it's so visceral.
Malva, before her death, tells him that she made them sick. She'd collected parts of the dead Sin Eater and poisoned Claire and Tom. She wanted to get to Jamie, and getting Claire out of the way was the only way to do that.
Allan began molesting his half-sister Malva from the time she was a young child and eventually, gets her pregnant.
Claire is about four years older than Jamie in Outlander
20, 1918. It was 1945 when she fell through the stones, and she would have been turning 27 that year. In the show, she has already turned 27 by the time she falls through the stones as the series is set in October rather than May at first.
As ambitious and enormous as the world of Outlander is, it's the characters and their relationships that make the story so compelling. At its heart is the love shared between Claire and Jamie, two people who ultimately would not let time or distance—even hundreds of years—keep them apart.
During his time apart from Claire, Jamie slept with several women, including Mary McNab (Emma Campbell-Jones) and Geneva Dunsany (Hannah James). And of course, there was Laoghaire MacKenzie (Nell Hudson) as well who had her sights on Jamie since season one.
Jamie: "Claire, it was you. It's always been you, and it always will be. Get into bed and put the candle out.
Jenny gives Claire a knife and a bag of coins; Claire tells her to plant potatoes because there's going to be a famine in a few years.
She didn't seem to be doing it for “fun.” Malva just seemed curious, but why would she be curious about that? She's never seemed curious about the intimacies of a couple before. This suggests that she's up to something. Watching the two gives her information to use in the future.
About half way through the book, the protagonist, Claire, is violently beaten by her lover/husband, Jamie, as punishment for endangering him and his clan.
Wigs, perms, and hot rollers help shape Claire's historically-accurate hairstyles. Regardless of Claire's on-screen age, wigs were incorporated into her hair and makeup protocol to achieve the character's look.
The haircutting was part of the process. Malva wanted to make Claire undesirable. She wanted to make Jamie turn to her instead of to his wife. We can get a sense of that from the way Claire worried about Jamie seeing her with the short, jagged hair.
“I curse you. I curse you with knowledge, Jack Randall. I give you the hour of your death. Jonathan Wolverton Randall, Born Sept 3rd, 1705, dies…” she whispers in his ear, and suddenly he knows that she's telling him the truth.
As mentioned previously, Jamie has been in love with Claire since their arrival at Leoch. With that in mind, the wedding kiss becomes part confession and part call and response. Jamie kisses Claire in the way that he has wanted to since they first met.
“He's about 25,” Gabaldon said. It's an interesting response. If you're up to date on the series, then you know that Jamie is not dead at the age of 25.
Jamie and Claire tragically lost their first child, Faith, who was stillborn in season two. They then spend more time apart and are unable to raise their second daughter, Brianna, together. After the time jump, it's nice to see the Frasers finally have a large family.
1701-1800. Jamie and Claire have been separated for 20 years. He is hiding near Lallybroch after surviving the Battle of Culloden. Jamie is blackmailed into sleeping with Ellesmere's young fiancée Geneva and impregnates her.
Although Allan got away with murder, he later told Claire the truth at Malva's graveside and admitted to her raping and impregnating her. Additionally, Allan confirmed he took Malva's life because she was going to reveal the truth and he didn't want this.
Claire eventually realizes that Malva is lying because she knows her husband well enough. Tom seems to question Malva's story.
He is a dwarf and some of the residents of Fraser's Ridge believe he is a punishment for his parents' sins. Henri-Christian is placed in a basket and put into a stream by some boys. Roger saves him and baptized him.
