No country has permanently run out of oil reserves entirely, but nations have experienced severe fuel shortages and economic crises due to a variety of factors, including mismanagement, sanctions, and price volatility.
The partial blockade imposed by the United States on Venezuela's energy exports was expected to shutter more than 70 percent of the country's oil production this year and wipe out its dominant source of public revenue, according to people briefed on Venezuela's internal projections compiled in December.
World Oil Reserves
The world has proven reserves equivalent to 46.6 times its annual consumption levels. This means it has about 47 years of oil left (at current consumption levels and excluding unproven reserves).
Sanctions are estimated to have diverted the bulk of Venezuela's exports to China and Russia, and any disruption to this supply could lead to a rise in the prices of Brent, West Texas Intermediate, and heavy grades relied on by the United States and Asian markets.
Venezuela is home to the largest proven oil reserve on earth but its potential far outweighs its actual output. Venezuela produces only about 1 million barrels of oil per day which is about 0. 8% of global crew production.
Australia's crude oil reserves in 2022 were 251 million barrels, a 5% increase from 2021. Most of the reserves are in the Northern Canarvon and Roebuck basins (174 million barrels, 69.3%), followed by the Cooper and Eromanga basins (50 million barrels, 19.9%) (Figure 2).
Oil: Estimates vary, but many sources put known oil reserves at lasting roughly 47-56 years, assuming consumption stays more or less as it is now. Natural Gas: Similar figures for gas, largely in the 50-year range.
The economy is characterized by corruption, food shortages, unemployment, mismanagement of the oil sector. Venezuela underwent hyperinflation from 2014 to 2024, with inflation stabilized 59.61%.
Oil Reserves in Venezuela
Venezuela has proven reserves equivalent to 1,374.2 times its annual consumption levels. This means that, without net exports, there would be about 1,374 years of oil left (at current consumption levels and excluding unproven reserves).
Oil is the leading export product in the world. Saudi Arabia is the world's largest oil exporter, followed by the United States and Russia. Brazil, Nigeria, and Kuwait round out the list of top 10 oil exporters.
Venezuela owns approximately 18% (or one-fifth) of the world's proven oil reserves, making it the country with the largest reserves globally, holding around 303 billion barrels as of recent data, though its production levels don't always match this vast resource.
Energy. A sudden loss of oil supplies would make it impossible to meet world energy needs. Countries have very varying stocks of natural gas which they could tap, and Johansen says such resources would be quickly depleted.
If oil hits $200 a barrel, expect severe global inflation, significant economic slowdowns or recessions, higher consumer costs (especially food), increased bankruptcies, and potential social unrest, particularly impacting the poor, leading to a fundamental reorientation of economies towards energy efficiency and proximity, though some analysts believe such high prices would trigger demand destruction, forcing prices down, The Conference Board,.
They include the following:
The seven sisters were the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey (later Exxon), the Standard Oil Company of New York (Socony, later Mobil, which eventually merged with Exxon), the Standard Oil Company of California (Socal, later renamed Chevron), the Texas Oil Company (later renamed Texaco), Gulf Oil (which later merged ...
Venezuela has the world's largest proven oil reserves (about 303 billion barrels), but U.S. sanctions have limited its ability to export crude and fully monetize this resource.
PDVSA. Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A. (PDVSA, Spanish pronunciation: [peðeˈβesa]; English: Petroleum of Venezuela) is the state-owned oil and gas company of Venezuela.
Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) secured a 15-year crude supply contract with PDVSA to import 400,000 barrels of oil per day, for processing at its twin refineries at Jamnagar, Gujarat. Essar is another major importer of oil from Venezuela.
The 2025–2026 operations are seen by the Trump administration as serving the triple goals of crippling Maduro, disrupting drug trade routes and getting access to Venezuela oil. Following the raid, Trump's press conference made clear that oil was a core motivation for the operations against Venezuela.
Hydrogen: The New Energy Source to Replace Oil and Gas in the Future. Hydrogen fuel is a zero-emission energy source, produced by burning pure hydrogen gas in the air.
Oil Reserves in India
India has proven reserves equivalent to 2.9 times its annual consumption levels. This means that, without imports, there would be about 3 years of oil left (at current consumption levels and excluding unproven reserves).
Venezuela has the world's largest proven oil reserves. However, production peaked at nearly 3.5 million barrels/day in the late 1990s and has since fallen below 1 million barrels/day due to mismanagement and underinvestment.
