Signs and Symptoms of Bowel Obstruction
In small bowel obstruction, abdominal pain is often on and off and cramping, but it can get better when you vomit. Vomiting tends to happen more often, be in larger amounts, and have a green or yellow color.
Yellow or yellow-brown vomit — can contain stomach acid (+/- bile). Green vomit — can be green due to grass or bile. Red or dark brown vomit — can indicate the presence of blood or food coloring. It would be best to reach out to a veterinarian if a dog or cat's vomit is suspected to contain blood.
Signs of stomach or intestinal blockage include persistent vomiting, abdominal pain, lethargy, loss of appetite, and constipation. Causes often involve ingestion of foreign objects or indigestible materials. Diagnosis requires veterinary examination, possibly including X-rays or ultrasound.
Mild symptoms of bowel obstruction may include decreased appetite, mild low energy, or occasional vomiting. Some dogs might seem uncomfortable but still eat and drink normally. Even with mild symptoms, watch for changes as conditions can worsen rapidly.
As the obstruction gets worse, your symptoms may happen more often and become more severe. You may have frequent vomiting, extreme bloating, and intense abdominal pain. These are signs of a complete obstruction, in which stool and gas are mostly or totally blocked from leaving the body.

In severe kidney failure, the amount of urine may actually decrease, or the pet may stop making urine altogether. Other signs as things get worse include digested blood in the stool making the stool look black and tarry, or vomiting digested blood, which looks like coffee grounds.
Sometimes foreign objects are able to pass on their own with time. But, when it comes to a timeline for intestinal blockages in dogs, every second counts. If the object does not pass on its own and your dog is exhibiting the symptoms detailed above, your pup will need to be treated as fast as possible.
The color of bile vomit can provide clues about intestinal obstruction. Greenish bile vomit often indicates a blockage in the intestines.
Red Vomit (hematemesis)
When you have a significant amount of vomit that is bright red in color or resembles coffee grounds, you should contact your doctor immediately. This can be the result of multiple conditions including, but not limited to: Liver failure.

When To Worry About Vomiting in Dogs
Pancreatitis becomes an emergency when your dog shows multiple signs of worsening together, such as persistent vomiting, intense pain, and weakness. If your normally energetic dog becomes lethargic, can't get comfortable, or has a visibly swollen stomach, these are serious warning signs.

What are the signs a bowel obstruction is clearing? You should be able to pass normal amounts of stool and gas if your bowel obstruction has cleared. You should also see your symptoms of pain, nausea or vomiting improve. Your obstruction may be cleared when you are back on a regular schedule with bowel movements.
