On an ultrasound image, a simple, fluid-filled cyst typically appears black (anechoic). This is because the fluid content allows sound waves to pass through easily, producing very few echoes which the machine interprets as a dark area.
For example, most waves pass through a fluid-filled cyst and send back very few or faint echoes, which look black on the display screen. On the other hand, waves will bounce off a solid tumor, creating a pattern of echoes that the computer will interpret as a lighter-colored image.
Even noncancerous brain cysts can cause problems by pressing against brain tissue causing headaches, vision problems or nausea.

Some of the known causes of cysts include: Blocked ducts, which cause a build-up of fluid. A defect in the cells. An impact injury that pops a blood vessel.
But when something disrupts that flow—like a blockage or a narrowing of the vessel—the flow becomes chaotic, leading to turbulence. This turbulence is often shown in yellow or green, helping doctors pinpoint potential issues like narrowed arteries, blood clots, or vessel damage.
Blood tests might be ordered to look for markers of disease, infection, or other conditions that might explain the abnormal imaging results. Depending on the area of concern, you might need a more detailed imaging test, such as an MRI or CT scan, which can provide more information than a standard ultrasound.
On ultrasound, an abscess is a spherical or oblong structure that is largely anechoic or hypoechoic. However, as opposed to a simple cyst that will be uniformly anechoic throughout, an abscess will contain hyperechoic debris. This feature can be used to differentiate an abscess from a cyst.
Flesh-colored or yellowish: The cysts typically have a whitish or yellowish appearance and blend in with the surrounding skin.
If a cyst is identified during the ultrasound scan, you may need to have this monitored with a repeat ultrasound scan in a few weeks, or a GP may refer you to a doctor who specialises in female reproductive health (gynaecologist).
Black in an ultrasound image represents liquid, like amniotic fluid or a fluid-filled cyst. Most sound waves pass through fluid-filled areas, with only a small amount reflected back, making the area appear like a black spot on ultrasound results.
You may be given IV (intravenous) pain medicines through a needle inserted into your vein. You may need to have fluids or blood replaced due to internal bleeding. In rare cases, a ruptured ovarian cyst may need surgery. This may be an emergency surgery.

"A radiologist can tell the difference between a cyst and a tumor using a breast ultrasound," says Dr. Terrell.
