Celtic Football Club was founded in the church hall of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in the Calton area of Glasgow, Scotland, at a meeting on November 6, 1887, by Irish Marist Brother Walfrid to help alleviate poverty in the East End. The meeting took place in the hall on East Rose Street (now Forbes Street).
The very foundations of the two Glasgow football clubs are built on the religious division between Catholicism and Protestantism. Traditionally, Rangers supporters are Protestant while Celtic fans support the Catholic Church.
