Shoulder pain radiating down the arm is often caused by a pinched nerve in the neck (cervical radiculopathy) from herniated discs or bone spurs, but can also stem from shoulder joint issues like rotator cuff injuries, impingement, tendinitis, bursitis, or frozen shoulder, where inflammation irritates nerves or tendons, causing pain to travel down the arm. Less common causes include thoracic outlet syndrome or even referred pain from other conditions like an ectopic pregnancy, so seeing a doctor for diagnosis is important.
Treatments for Pain in Neck and Shoulder Radiating Down Arm
Physical therapy. Medication such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) Corticosteroid injections or nerve blocks. Lifestyle changes like improving your posture, exercise, or ergonomic adjustments at work.
While experiencing biceps tendonitis, you may notice or experience these symptoms: Persistent pain in the front region of the shoulder. Bruising near the forearm or upper arm of the elbow. Ache or pain that radiates down the bones of the upper arm.
If you have severe pain in your shoulder, you could also have nausea. Any severe pain can cause nausea. This is because extreme pain can stimulate the nervous system. When the nervous system is in a hyperactive state, it can lead to nausea.
Shoulder pain can feel like someone is deeply pinching you along the bra strap or on your neck, or it can be painful to lie on your right side. All of these pain symptoms may be a sign of HELLP Syndrome or a related problem in the liver. Pain in this area should be taken very seriously; do not dismiss it and go to bed.
Red flags include: Trauma, pain and weakness, or sudden loss of ability to actively raise the arm (with or without trauma): suspect acute rotator cuff tear. Any shoulder mass or swelling: suspect malignancy. Red skin, painful joint, fever, or the person is systemically unwell: suspect septic arthritis.
What are the symptoms of a rotator cuff tear? Rotator cuff tear symptoms include: Difficulty, pain and weakness caused by raising, lowering or rotating your arm.
There are several main causes of shoulder pain:
Distinguishing symptoms/features of SIRVA include: sudden onset shoulder pain within 48 hours of vaccination- different to the injection site pain expected following vaccination. restricted range of movement (RROM) of affected shoulder.
Stage IV of Tendinitis
This is the most painful stage with continuous pain. There is pain before, during and after activity.
Clinical presentation may include increasing shoulder pain and stiffness, high temperature, local erythema, swelling, warmth, and fibrinous exudate. Generalized fatigue and signs of sepsis may be present in severe cases.
Rotator cuff tears are often mistaken for tendonitis. They happen when the tendons around the shoulder joint get torn. Both can cause pain and make it hard to move, but they need different treatments. Getting the right diagnosis is very important.
Lying on your back is the best sleeping position for calcific tendonitis. Use a pillow under your knees to ease the strain on your back and neck. Sleeping on your non-affected side with a pillow between your knees to support them. This helps keep your spine straight and reduces strain on your hurting shoulder.
Do Not Overuse the Affected Shoulder. Using an inflamed shoulder as if nothing is wrong can worsen tendonitis. Common overuse activities include repetitive movements, lifting heavy objects, or exercising despite the pain. These actions can increase swelling and delay recovery.
A Pancoast tumor is a rare type of lung cancer that begins in the top part of your lung. Symptoms usually include shoulder pain and arm weakness. Pancoast tumors aren't curable, but in many cases, they're manageable with treatment. Treatments include chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery.
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease that causes your immune system to attack your own tissues – more specifically the shoulder tissue and joints. In RA, the defenses that protect the body from infection damage healthy tissue (such as cartilage and ligaments) instead.
Shoulder pain is a common complaint in the elderly, the majority of which is related to musculoskeletal causes, but it can sometimes be a sign of a more sinister problem such as liver metastasis.
Shoulder impingement syndrome
This results in pain and decreased motion. These symptoms can be mistaken for a rotator cuff tear, but the pain caused by shoulder impingement is diffuse and not sharp, like the pain caused by a rotator cuff tear.
And when it comes to our shoulders, there are three main emotions that can become stored there and cause shoulder tension or pain: stress, anger, and trauma (26).
