Coccidiosis in lambs is caused by ingesting Eimeria protozoan parasites, often triggered by stress, overcrowding, and poor hygiene, leading to intestinal damage, especially when young lambs graze contaminated pastures early. While most lambs get infected, disease outbreaks happen when a high parasite load meets factors like cold, wet weather, nutritional stress, or weaning, overwhelming their developing immunity.
Fecal contamination of the environment allows oocysts to be present in lambing pens (especially when uncleaned or partially cleaned), bedding, and feed. The udders and teats of ewes may become soiled, plus small numbers in the ewe's feces allow early infection exposure of the lamb.
Amprolium (Corid®) is used to prevent and treat coccidiosis in sheep. It is added to the drinking water (as a preventative) or administered as a drench (as a treatment).
It's impossible to eradicate the coccidia parasite, especially when you can't see it. But freezing temperatures, drought, sunlight and ammonia will kill it. Coccidia multiply best in warm, wet, dirty, overcrowded conditions so eliminate these conditions whenever possible.

Coccidiosis in dogs often causes watery diarrhea with excessive mucus, sometimes with an unusually foul odor and yellow-green-brown color.
At this time there is not a great deal of extensive scientific evidence to support ACV as a treatment for Coccidiosis, there is indeed some merit behind the claims. Coccidia lives inside the digestive tract of chickens. In there they find a perfect environment from which to thrive and lay eggs.
The lifecycle takes between 2 – 4 weeks depending on the species of Eimeria. The lifecycle of Eimeria follows the typical coccidian lifecycle. Virtually all sheep flocks are infected with coccidia, but only some lambs develop clinical disease (Catchpole et al., 1975).

Diclazuril and toltrazuril are oral drenches which can be used for treatment in the face of an outbreak. They should be given to all lambs over three weeks of age in a group where coccidiosis has been diagnosed as the cause of clinical disease. It may be necessary to repeat the diclazuril dose after three weeks.
In some kittens or adult cats, coccidiosis may spontaneously go away on its own. In severe cases, both symptomatic and causative treatments may be needed. A course of antibiotics such as Sulfadimethoxine, Trimethoprim-Sulfonamide or Amprolium can stop the coccidia from reproducing.
Common symptoms include bloody stools and weight loss. However, coccidiosis can pose a diagnostic challenge due to asymptomatic losses, especially of older, apparently healthy lambs. It often looks like the lambs are starving because of the severe intestinal damage caused by coccidia.
Coccidia lives on the vitamin thiamine (b1); and CORID strips all vitamins, therefore killing the Coccidia. That's why we recommend only giving CORID water and feed during treatment days — and liquid vitamins after treatment days.
Coccidiosis is a parasitic disease that can occur in calves from as young as 4 weeks of age, but normally between 3-8 months. Infection is by ingestion of coccidia oocysts, from contaminated pasture, feed, water or grooming each other.
The Coccidia species life cycle works very similarly to the Giardia species, but instead of your pet picking up the parasite in water, the parasite is usually ingested from infected plant matter, soil and faeces itself (Rats and mice are also vectors). The life cycle then closely resembles Giardia as explained above.
The most common drug used to treat coccidiosis is a sulfa-class antibiotic, sulfadimethoxine (Albon®). It is typically administered for 5-20 days.
Used preventively or at first signs of infection, it helps reduce diarrhea, dehydration, and mortality associated with coccidial outbreaks, especially in young or immunocompromised animals. Results are typically seen within 1–3 days of treatment.
Treatment for coccodiosis is with sulfa drugs or anticoccidial drugs. Amprolium is an anticoccidial drug available without a prescription and is a fast, highly effective treatment for coccidiosis. Use caution when using Sulfamonaides also know as Sulfas. Sulfa drugs can cause a toxic overdose.
Ensure clean bedding especially around feed areas, move feed hoppers regularly. Creep areas at pasture can become heavily contaminated especially during wet weather therefore the troughs must be moved daily. Avoid faecal contamination of, and around, feed troughs. Move feed troughs regularly to clean ground.
Clinical coccidiosis normally develops because of high oocyst exposure or various stressors on the hosts such as poor nutrition, nutritional deficiencies, overcrowding, poor sanitation, or intercurrent disease.
The most effective coccidiosis treatments on the market are based on the synthetic phenol, Chlorocresol, and the higher the concentration, the more effective the treatment. Secondary actives such as alcohol or acid are used to break through the protective layer of the oocyst so that the phenol can take effect.
