In the U.S. Army, soldiers are exempt from body fat standards if they score 465 points or higher on the Army Fitness Test (AFT) and achieve at least 80 points in each event, a policy effective since late 2025, shifting focus to physical performance over just body composition measurements. Soldiers still must meet height/weight screening, but high performance on the AFT bypasses the tape test, recognizing that strong performance indicates fitness, according to Army.mil and AUSA.org.
WASHINGTON — The U.S. Army has published a new directive exempting all Soldiers who score 465 points or more on the new Army Fitness Test (AFT) from body fat standards. Soldiers must score 80 points or more in each event, and no alternative events are permitted.
Acceptable: This range represents healthy body fat levels for the general population. Men between 14-24% and women between 21-31% (varying by age) fall within normal parameters for good health. This range balances metabolic function with disease risk factors.
At 22% body fat, men often have a softer midsection, less muscle definition, and a healthy but not overly lean look, while women typically appear athletic and toned, with some ab definition visible when flexing and definition in arms and legs, sitting in the "fitness" or "average" range for both genders, though visual appearance varies by individual.
Army Body Fat Assessment Exception for Army Combat Fitness Test Score. Army Directive 2023-08 modifies the ABCP to reflect that all Soldiers who score 540 or higher on the record Army Combat Fitness Test, with a minimum of 80 points in each event, are exempt from the body-fat assessment.

Fatness, as defined by DOD, means a body-fat content in excess of 26 percent of total weight for men and 36 percent of total weight for women.
Here's a simple rule of thumb: If you are losing strength in the gym, you are cutting too hard and are losing muscle. But with a proper sustainable calorie deficit, you can lose 2 or a maximum of 3% of your body fat per month. So the 20% to 10% body fat transformation will take roughly 5 months.
Visible Abs Require More Than Just Crunches
Visible abdominal muscles require achieving specific body fat percentage thresholds — typically 10-12% for men and 16-19% for women — though individual variation exists due to genetics, muscle development, and fat distribution patterns.
You can see that the optimum body fat percentage for physical attractiveness is around 12%, with both lower and higher values resulting in lower ratings of attractiveness. Within the healthy body fat percentage range though, the differences aren't major.
This estimate for fertility corresponds with the ideal body fat level for testosterone and growth hormone in men: both anabolic hormone levels negatively correlate with body fat percentage between 12-47% [2] (no data on leaner subjects).
The ideal body fat percentage for building muscle and bulking is 10-15% in men and 18-24% in women. If you exceed this range by more than 1-2%, it is time to stop your bulk. Otherwise, you will gain more fat than muscle (assuming you started your bulk below or within these ranges).
If you enlist to become a Soldier and don't meet the physical requirements at MEPS, you may be eligible for the fitness track of a program called the Future Soldier Preparatory Course. Over 90 days, Army health and fitness experts will help you meet the required body fat composition before you start Basic Training.
Must meet the body fat standard in order to be released from the ABCP. Must demonstrate satisfactory progress, as defined in paragraph 3–9b, while enrolled in the ABCP and understand that failure to do so will result in bar to reenlistment or initiation of separation proceedings.
Best cardio for fat burning
Our results show that individuals with sleep disturbances have higher BMI (β = 0.93, 95% CI: 0.72–1.13), waist circumference (β = 2.40, 95% CI: 1.92–2.88), lean body mass (β = 0.71, 95% CI: 0.30–1.12), and body fat percentage (β = 0.64, 95% CI: 0.37–0.90).
The most stubborn fat is usually visceral fat, which is the fat that surrounds your internal organs, especially in the belly area. This type of fat is harder to lose compared to the fat just under your skin (subcutaneous fat) and is linked to higher health risks.
22:2 fasting, also known as the OMAD (One Meal A Day) diet, is a form of intermittent fasting where you fast for 22 hours and eat all your daily calories within a compact 2-hour window, focusing on nutrient-dense foods to support weight loss, improve digestion, and boost mental clarity, though research on its long-term safety and effectiveness is limited. It's an intense, restrictive schedule that helps reduce overall calorie intake and may trigger autophagy (cellular cleanup), but requires careful attention to nutrition during the eating window to avoid deficiencies.
For men, 20% body fat is generally considered in the "acceptable" or "average" range, bordering on "fitness" or slightly overweight, with some extra fat but no clear muscle definition, while for women, 20% is in the "fitness" or "good" category, showing some definition but not overly lean. The term "chubby" is subjective, but at 20% body fat, most people won't look extremely lean, though it's healthy for men and good for women, falling within typical ranges before obesity becomes a concern, say 8fit and InBody USA.
Certain medical conditions — such as asthma, diabetes, severe allergies, certain types of mental health disorders and heart problems — can disqualify individuals from joining the military due to the physical and mental demands of service.
Each branch of the military has age limits to enlist in active duty: Air Force: 17 - 42. Army: 17 - 35. Coast Guard: 17 - 41.
a. All male Soldiers will maintain a clean-shaven face when in uniform or on duty in civilian attire in accordance with reference 1c. Mustaches are authorized.
