Asians drink a variety of beverages, but South Koreans are consistently ranked as the heaviest drinkers per capita, primarily consuming soju, a popular distilled spirit. In Southeast Asia, Laos often leads in per capita alcohol consumption, while China is known for baijiu, and Japan favors beer and sake.
Of the 10 ASEAN countries (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam), Laos ranks number 1 for alcohol consumption. In 2019, Laotians drank an average of 11.52 liters of alcohol per year.

There are two main strategies for treating addiction in China: (1) enrolment in compulsory detoxification centres, and (2) sentencing to “education through labour” camps. Addicts are often forced to go through so-called “dry detoxification” (without any medication to alleviate physical pains).
What are the laws in China for tourists? Tourists in China must abide by strict local laws. This includes respecting cultural sites, not engaging in political activities, and avoiding drug use or possession. Photography in restricted areas, such as military zones, is also prohibited.

Between 30%-50% of people of East Asian descent have alcohol intolerance, a fact which leads many to refer to the condition as “Asian flush” or “Asian glow.” But although people of Asian ancestry are most at risk for alcohol intolerance, the condition can affect people of all races and ethnicities.
For example, people of East Asian descent often report experiencing terrible hangovers, which may be because many have very low levels of an enzyme that helps process alcohol and its toxic metabolites. Another theory is that people with weaker immune systems may be more susceptible to hangovers, Dr. Stock said.
In Asian populations, it is due to an inherited deficiency in one of the enzymes involved in the breakdown of alcohol: aldehyde dehydrogenase. This type of reaction is very rare, but not unknown, in other ethnic groups.
