Lupus symptoms in the eyes often involve dryness (gritty, burning, blurry vision), inflammation (redness, pain, light sensitivity from scleritis/uveitis), and retinal issues (cotton wool spots, hemorrhages, vessel changes), leading to blurred vision, floaters, or even vision loss, sometimes from medication side effects or optic nerve problems, requiring urgent care.
Patients with lupus often also have dry eyes, whether they strictly meet criteria for Sjogren's syndrome or not. Often the sensation is one of having grit in your eyes; sometimes the opposite can occur, where you might be tearing excessively.
Joint pain, swelling and stiffness can be the main symptoms for some people with lupus. In most cases, lupus is unlikely to cause permanent damage or change the shape of joints.
In the light of positive immunological markers, a diagnosis of drug induced-systemic lupus erythematosus likely caused by metronidazole exposure.
Women with lupus can safely get pregnant and most will have normal pregnancies and healthy babies. However, all women with lupus who get pregnant are considered to have a "high risk pregnancy." This means that problems during pregnancy may be more likely for women with lupus.
Lupus causes
Genetic factors: Having certain genetic variations may make you more likely to have lupus. Hormones: Reactions to certain hormones in your body (especially estrogen) may make you more likely to develop lupus. Environmental factors: These are aspects about where you live, work or spend time.
The medicines used most often to manage lupus include:
There have been rare reports of Ozempic triggering drug-induced lupus.
But essentially everyone with lupus is EBV-infected, studies have shown. An EBV-lupus connection has been long suspected but never nailed down until now.
One database of more than 21 million lupus cases over the last three decades found 625 cases were drug-induced and associated with a PPI. In half of these cases, a PPI was the only suspected drug, and omeprazole was the most common one – accounting for one third of cases.
Swollen glands. Over time, people with lupus may get swollen lymph glands during a flare. Headaches. These are usually related to stress and tension but can be related to a lupus flare.
Subacute Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus
SCLE can cause circular red patches with a ring-like border that may be scaly. These rashes often show up on sun-exposed skin, including the legs, and usually don't itch or cause pain.
Some uncommon symptoms of lupus include angina, stroke and mini-stroke, pregnancy loss, kidney problems, and blood problems. Lupus can be difficult to diagnose, but reporting less common symptoms may help doctors make an accurate diagnosis.
These tests can help identify symptoms of lupus in the eye early, before they begin to affect your vision for the long term. Tests may include: A tear film evaluation to check for dryness and tear quality. A slit-lamp exam to detect inflammation on the eye's surface.
Lupus can attack many different parts of the body. Some call it the cruel mystery. Lupus is an autoimmune disease that can strike any part of the body, but the wide range of symptoms can be easily mistaken for something else.
Having lupus can make everyday life challenging. When your lupus is active, symptoms like joint stiffness, pain, fatigue, confusion, or depression can make simple tasks difficult — and sometimes impossible.
Among the infectious diseases associated with SLE is Toxoplasma gondii [[14], [15], [16]], an obligate apicomplexan parasite that infects an estimated one-third of the world's human population [17].
Lupus isn't directly hereditary, meaning it's not passed down from parent to child like some genetic conditions.
Having lupus also increases your risk of: Infection. People with lupus are more likely to get infections. Both the condition and its treatments can weaken the immune system and lead to infections.
"Ozempic hands" is a slang term for the visible changes in hands due to rapid fat loss from GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic, making them look thinner, bonier, and more aged with prominent veins, tendons, and thinner skin, as subcutaneous fat diminishes and skin doesn't fully contract quickly. It's not a formal diagnosis but a common cosmetic effect of significant weight loss, similar to "Ozempic face".
Currently, there are no known causes or cures for the disease, just treatments to manage lupus. Symptoms of lupus include skin rash, fever, pain/swelling in joints, etc. Recently, studies have also identified sleep disturbance as one of the more common symptoms, occurring in around 50%-80% of people living with SLE.
Causes
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease that leads to severe multiorgan damage. Lang Chuang Fang (LCF) is a Chinese herbal medicine that is clinically prescribed for treating SLE.
Many people who have (or suspect they have) lupus see a rheumatologist (or pediatric rheumatologist if a child or teen). This type of doctor specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases of the joints and muscles.
Although extremely rare, autoimmune diseases can develop after COVID-19 infection (2). However, cases of SLE specifically after COVID-19 are uncommon. Only two cases of SLE manifesting after COVID-19 infection have been noted in literature.
