Small grey mites are often mold mites, bird/rodent mites, or sometimes mistaken for springtails, usually found in damp areas (mold mites) or near nests (bird mites) and indicate a moisture/pest issue, while springtails are harmless decomposers that jump and thrive in moisture, with identification depending on location, movement (fast vs slow), and host association.
Springtails. Springtails are small jumping creatures that sometimes appear in large numbers in moist indoor areas. They are mainly a nuisance pest, since springtails do not bite humans or pets, nor do they spread disease or damage household furnishings.
The quickest method is to reduce moisture (use a dehumidifier), clean thoroughly, and apply diatomaceous earth or a mite-specific pesticide to infested areas. Sealing cracks and improving airflow also stops new mites from entering.
If you are noticing what appears to be a tiny grayish speck that moves or jumps on your window sills or other areas, chances are, you have been invaded by springtails. These six-legged arthropods are less than a half a millimeter long, which is about the size of the period at the end of this sentence.
Bark lice are beneficial tiny gray insects that live in the cracks of trees. They feed on organic matter, such as pollen and mold that are on the tree bark. These insects do not cause harm to the tree. Maybe we shouldn't have named them "LICE" then.
Head lice are a tan or gray insect about the size of a sesame seed. The female louse sticks each egg to the base of a hair shaft less than 1/8 inch (3 millimeters) from the scalp.

Psocids. Psocids are tiny (about 1mm long) grey or brown insects. Food cupboards become infested with them, with the packaging from flour, milk, powder, sugar or semolina covered in them. The food itself is not at fault.
Like cockroach nymphs, Booklice nymphs are similar in appearance to hatched bed bugs as they range in appearance from translucent white, to gray or brown. The greatest difference is that they are smaller in size. They are not blood feeders. Their primary food source is fungi, pollen, mold and dead insects.
Mite bites.
Intense itching and many small, red bumps, like pimples, are seen. Burrows may also be seen. These look like thin, wavy lines.
Steam cleaning or washing items in hot water is a surefire way to kill and eliminate mites of all types. Use a steam cleaner to heat treat your carpeting, furniture, and bedding. Wash the bedspreads, clothing, and other fabrics in hot water and dry clean them at a high temperature.
Control with natural or organic sprays like a soap-and-water mixture, neem oil, or essential oils. Employ natural predators like ladybugs, green lacewings, and birds. Grow the right plants that attract predatory insects, plants that repel aphids, and plants that "trap" aphids.
Dust mites can live in the bedding, mattresses, upholstered furniture, carpets or curtains. Humidity is the most important factor in determining whether a house has high levels of dust mites. This is because dust mites do not drink water like we do; they absorb moisture from the air.
Which tiny black bug looks like a speck of pepper? If tiny black specs appear in your food products, such as flour or dried oats, they are most likely weevils.
Part of the tyroglyphid mite family (which also includes grain mites and cheese mites), mold mites were first documented in 1781 in Austria. These tiny, soft-bodied pests have no wings and are nearly invisible to the naked eye, measuring less than 0.5 millimeters in length.
Two species are cosmopolitan pests, the common silverfish and the firebrat, Thermobia domestica. The common silverfish is up to 10mm in length and uniformly silver to slate gray in color. These silverfish are a common pest in homes, libraries and museums where they eat paper, fabrics, and get into cereals.
Addressing moisture issues inside your home is crucial for eliminating wood mites. Pinpoint and repair any leaks immediately, especially in your bathroom, kitchen, or plumbing under sinks. Use a dehumidifier to reduce moisture levels and ensure proper ventilation in damp areas like basements to prevent mold buildup.
Besides bedbugs, numerous insects bite at night. These night biters can be mites, fleas, mosquitoes, lice, spiders, and ticks. Most of these insect bite marks look alike; hence, you should first look for bedbugs and investigate further.
Springtails: tiny, 1/8 inch or less, gray to white insects, jump, in bathrooms, around flower pots, or areas of high humidity.
House dust mites are invisible to the naked eye, 0.006 – 0.02” large, grey/white and almost transparent.
Remove Food Sources: If your mite infestation is located in a food cupboard, discard any contaminated food. Keep well-sealed food dry and stored in a clean place. Furniture Placement: Move furniture away from walls, leaving space for air to circulate. This helps to prevent the build-up of moisture and mould.
Silverfish are typically scavengers who seek small crumbs, but they may also infest stored food like cereals. These silvery insects are even known to eat certain fabrics, wallpaper glue, paper, and book bindings.
Dry vacuuming doesn't pick up dust mites. Consider steam cleaning carpets when possible. In addition to cleaning the carpet, the heat of the steam kills dust mites. You can buy chemicals (ascaricides) that kill dust mites and that you can use on carpeting and furniture.
These microscopic pests often thrive in mattresses, pillows and upholstered furniture. Visible signs of a mite infestation—Though mites are nearly invisible to the naked eye, you may notice tiny black specks or clusters—potentially droppings or dead mites—on bedding, upholstery or carpets.
By running your air conditioning, you can keep temperatures and humidity low. In fact, keeping your temperature below 75 and your humidity below 50 percent will probably kill most of your dust mites.
