Leukemia staging varies by type, but for Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL), the 5-stage Rai system (0-4) tracks progression using blood counts and physical signs like swollen lymph nodes, enlarged spleen/liver (Stages 1-3), and low platelets (Stage 4), indicating increasing severity**, while acute leukemias (ALL/AML) are often described as untreated, in remission, or recurrent rather than by traditional stages.
Stages of Chronic Leukemia
Stage 1 – A patient has high levels of white blood cells and enlarged lymph nodes. Stage 2 – A patient has high levels of white blood cells and is anemic. He or she may also have enlarged lymph nodes. Stage 3 – A patient has high levels of white blood cells and is anemic.
Patients with the most lethal form of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) – based on genetic profiles of their cancers – typically survive for only four to six months after diagnosis, even with aggressive chemotherapy.
The most common types of leukemia are organized into two main groups — chronic and acute. Chronic leukemia progresses slowly, over months to years. Acute leukemia develops quickly and worsens over days to weeks.
Fever and frequent infections due to low counts of healthy white blood cells. Excessive sweating or night sweats. Easy bleeding and bruising, including bleeding of the gums due to low platelet levels. Recurrent nose bleeds.
Leukemia symptoms commonly include fatigue, breathlessness, infections, and bruising or bleeding more easily. Leukemia* symptoms vary depending on the type of leukemia. Not everyone gets the same symptoms, and you won't necessarily have all of the symptoms.
Night sweats can happen because the body is trying to fight leukemia. Our bodies heat up to fight infections and illnesses, including leukemia. This can cause both fever and night sweats.
Leukemia starts in the soft, inner part of the bones (bone marrow), but often moves quickly into the blood. It can then spread to other parts of the body, such as the lymph nodes, spleen, liver, central nervous system, and other organs.
Weight loss - Unexplained loss of over 10% of body weight over the course of a 6-month period of time may indicate CLL is progressing. Extreme tiredness - Extreme fatigue or shortness of breath while doing normal day-to-day activities should be a sign of concern.
Stage II: This stage is characterized by an enlarged spleen or liver in addition to swollen lymph nodes. Stage III: Indicates anemia due to leukemia cells crowding the bone marrow. Stage IV: The last stages of leukemia in CLL involve low platelet counts, which increase the risk of bleeding.
Childhood leukemia was fatal for the vast majority of children who developed it in the past. Before the 1970s, fewer than 10% of children diagnosed with the disease survived five years after diagnosis. But since then, this outlook has improved dramatically. In North America and Europe, around 85% now survive that long.
Leukemia Treatment
Someone who has leukemia may die from different things. There may be a sudden loss of blood or a stroke, because of the inability of the blood to clot. There may be complications from low hemoglobin levels. Infection is possible.
Common leukemia symptoms may include:
Frequent infections that are hard to treat. Shortness of breath. Pale skin (pallor) Easy bruising or bleeding (such as frequent nosebleeds or bleeding gums)
As AML progresses towards the final stages, patients may experience constant coldness, paleness, fatigue, and drowsiness. They may also begin to lose control of their bladder and bowel function. In some rare cases, the blood can become too thick due to the presence of too many cancerous cells.
Most people will need to learn to live with taking daily medicines and the side effects. You will need regular blood tests and hospital visits. Many people face uncertainty and worry about how well treatment is working and what will happen next. With time and support, many people manage to adjust to life with CML.
Some people with leukemia or myelodysplastic syndromes have bone or joint pain. This bone pain is most often felt in the long bones of the arms and legs, in the ribs, and in the breastbone.
Some people whose CLL has changed (transformed) into a high grade disease have bone pain and night sweats. Bone pain happens because there are too many leukaemia cells in the bone marrow, causing pressure on nerves and causing pain. The exact cause of the night sweats is unknown.
Your doctor will conduct a complete blood count (CBC) to determine if you have leukemia. This test may reveal if you have leukemic cells. Abnormal levels of white blood cells and abnormally low red blood cell or platelet counts can also indicate leukemia.
Who is most at risk?
Leukemia affects the tissues that make up your lymphatic system. This is a large network of organs and tissues that create, carry and store the cells that help your body fight diseases. It includes your bone marrow, lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, thymus and spleen.
Leukemia spots, called petechiae, look like tiny, flat, pinpoint-sized red, purple, or brown dots that appear in clusters, often on arms, legs, or the mouth, and importantly, do not fade or turn white when pressed. They form from broken capillaries due to low platelets, resembling a rash but are actually tiny bleeds under the skin.
If you've been diagnosed with cancer, you may notice changes in the smells your body produces. There are several reasons for this, including cancer's effect on surrounding tissues, your metabolism, etc. Cancer treatments like chemotherapy may also create conditions for unpleasant odors.
Causes of night sweats
medicines, such as some antidepressants, steroids and painkillers. low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) alcohol or drug use. a harmless condition called hyperhidrosis that makes you sweat too much all the time.
Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is often a silent disease during the initial stages, with many patients having no noticeable symptoms. CLL is commonly detected by accident when routine blood testing reveals an elevated lymphocyte count (lymphocytosis).
